A vacancy has arisen for a Trainee Biomedical Scientist in the Biochemistry department at York Hospital. This is a permanent contract for a full time position of 37.5 hours a week.
The successful candidate will be part of a team providing an efficient, high quality diagnostic service through participation in the specialist technical and scientific operations within the Clinical Biochemistry Department.
The department is fully equipped with the Roche Cobas 8100 pre analytic system which is tracked to the Roche Cobas 8000 analytical lines, TOSOH G11’s, Optilite and protein analysis using the Sebia Capillarys and Hydrogel system.
It will be a contractual requirement to participate in the 24/7 shift system.

Main duties of the job
Under supervision:
1. To carry out the analysis of patient samples, quality controls (QC) and external quality assessment samples (EQA) according to departmental SOPs and departmental Quality Assurance Policy.
2. To ensure that specialist equipment within the area of work is functioning efficiently through good housekeeping, troubleshooting and preventive maintenance.
3. Technical validation of patient results.
4. Communicate effectively with clinicians, nurses and other service users on information of a technical nature.
5. To undertake shift work including evening, weekend and night work. This will involve working mostly alone and includes the provisional authorisation of results that are used for immediate patient management, carrying potentially serious consequences if any errors occur in the process.

14. Working towards a BSc (Hons) IBMS approved Biomedical Science course (or alternative IBMS/HCPC approved qualification/apprenticeship)
