Estimating Manager

An opportunity has arisen for a Engineering Manager to join the Team at Galliford Try.
As Estimating Manager you will have responsibility for the production of accurate cost estimates for multiple tenders on a range of projects and bids. You will also have overall responsibility for the Regional Estimating function ensuring all bids are commercially robust, competitively positioned, and aligned with the company’s financial, operational and risk management objectives. Working with the Pre Construction Director to secure adequate new business to achieve targeted turnover and profit levels with appropriate growth.
This role requires travel within the region and attendance at both regional offices in Leeds and Team Valley.
What you will be doing:
1. Support the Pre-Construction Director with commercial insights, benchmarking and market intelligence.
2. Lead, motivate and coach estimating team members, providing developmental support to enable them to provide excellent commercial and procurement services.
3. Fostering a culture whereby employees feel able to contribute positively through sharing ideas and best practice.
4. Influence and promoting the reasons to the Senior Management Team to enable key commercial decisions to be made.
5. Be responsible for completing PDRs for all direct reports.
6. Ensure submitted tenders have requisite authorisation, are prepared in accordance with the Company BMS and are submitted on time.
7. Review and challenge tender estimates, preliminaries, and margin proposals to maintain consistency and accuracy.
8. Maintain a register of all tenders submitted, the success rate, and seek and collate feedback on all bids.
9. Assist in the development of the company BMS and tendering procedures to meet the requirements of the business and current market and legislative requirements
10. Establish and agree an annual ‘Bid’ budget and monitor performance against the budget.
11. Support development of a visible pipeline of opportunities/ tenders.
General Estimating requirements
12. Provide accurate cost estimates including preliminaries and supporting technical information to enable the Company to submit competitive tenders.
13. Work closely with design management, planning, and operational teams to develop integrated bid strategies.
14. Support client engagement, presentations, and tender interviews where commercial expertise adds value.
15. Preparation of Bills of Quantities including full take-offs and marked-up drawings.
16. Prepare enquiry schedules and select appropriate companies from whom quotations should be sought.
17. Contribute to maintenance of Company’s Supplier database.
18. Obtain sufficient quotes to enable sound commercial judgements to be made and to satisfy specific framework requirements.
19. Liaise with supply chain partners to ensure accurate market pricing and value engineering options.
20. Prepare Preliminary & General Item cost estimates.
21. Provide analytical rate comparisons and build-ups as required.
22. Ensure adequate risk management throughout the tender period, identify, and analyse risks and manage risk registers.
23. Ensure Conditions of Contract are reviewed ahead of Tender Settlement.
24. Identify and analyse risks & opportunities to identify areas of potential commercial advantage.
25. Co-ordinate and attend tender settlement meetings, with appropriate attendees; ensuring all relevant cost and technical information is available for presentation and to complete the tender as instructed.
