The Opportunity
This is an exciting opportunity to support the leadership of the transport planning business in the North West, based in Manchester. Join a growing team of over 80 planners, policy makers, strategists, modellers, and economists working across the North West and Yorkshire region.
With the rapid pace of transport devolution and major scheme programs across the North-West, especially the delivery of Transport for Greater Manchester’s (TfGM) ambitious agenda, our work in transport planning, place making, and strategic advisory is becoming more diverse and impactful. Arup is at the forefront of this agenda, leading initiatives like the North-West Rail Vision for the Liverpool-Manchester Rail Board, rail devolution in Greater Manchester, Manchester Clean Air Zone, Active Neighbourhoods, and the TfN Strategic Transport Plan—some examples of the significant programs we are delivering locally, regionally, and nationally.
Based on this success, we plan to grow our Manchester Transport Planning team and strengthen its integration with our broader city planning capabilities, linking transport, housing, nature, and the economy.
At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective where individuality thrives. Our strength comes from respecting, sharing, and connecting diverse experiences, perspectives, and ideas. You will have the opportunity to do socially useful work that is meaningful to Arup, your career, our members, and the communities we serve.
Is this role right for you?
Due to growth opportunities, we seek an inspirational, politically astute, and well-connected transport planner to elevate our strategic role across the North-West and support your ambitions for senior leadership. This role offers the chance to contribute to and influence the future of mobility in Manchester and beyond, developing skills to deliver projects supporting sustainable transport, active travel, public transport enhancements, and integrated land-use planning. We value a dynamic, motivated, passionate, and connected individual with a strong track record, established networks, and a personal profile, rather than specific skills or background.
Requirements
* Experience in presenting to clients, bidding, winning, reviewing, and steering strategic projects of regional and national significance, positioning Arup to secure more projects through frameworks and broader connections in both public and private sectors.
* Ability to develop and implement a forward-thinking strategic Business Plan for Transport Planning across the NWY, ensuring alignment with regional strategies.
* Experience in maintaining close relationships with key stakeholders on major projects in the NWY region, identifying their strategic priorities to position Arup for future work.
* Keeping up-to-date with market developments, anticipating changes, and assessing opportunities for service expansion.
