The role
The Central Underwriting teams are located throughout the UK mainly in our regional central underwriting hubs including Colchester and York. The team forms part of Hiscox UK's central operations function and are responsible for the technical underwriting of new business and referrals, influencing the declinature rate targets for the portfolio using the change cycle.
As an underwriter in the Specialty Central Underwriting Team, you will focus on a particular part of our Specialty book while building product expertise and client and broker relationships. However, you will also gain experience and knowledge in other Specialty products.
The role will provide a breadth of development opportunities and exposure to our expert underwriters and market-leading products, and is key to helping us deliver on our ambitious plans while taking further steps to an exciting and fulfilling specialist underwriting career.
You'll love delivering superb service to our broker partners as well as direct customers and have a creative and logical thought process to underwriting risks that are anything but vanilla. If you want to be a specialist, not a generalist, this is the job for you......
What You'll be doing:
* Underwriting a range of our specialist commercial products in line with our service standards and underwriting strategy
* Working towards set targets each month including profitability, conversion and productivity
* Negotiating both internally and externally with brokers, clients and internal stakeholders
* Taking a proactive approach to learning and developing your skills in underwriting, product knowledge and sales with the support of peers and mentors
* Acting as a referral point for Trainee Underwriter colleagues and preparing comprehensive referrals with your recommendations to Specialty product underwriters
* Assisting on a mix of Specialty projects to help shape the future of our business
* Showing courage and innovation by spotting process improvements and how we can do things differently to improve the customer experience and drive profitable growth
Our must haves:
* At least two years underwriting experience ideally within commercial lines of business. Experience with specialty risks is desired but not essential
* A strong team player capable of taking ownership of your product specialism and driving results
* An analytical mind, proactive in thought process and the ability to back up the decisions you make
* A natural flair for building relationships enabling you to develop close rapport with brokers, clients and colleagues
* Ability to be an ambassador of Hiscox and demonstrate 'going the extra mile' dedication and commitment in a fast growing and demanding area of the business
* Self-motivated with a strong determination to learn, achieve results and succeed personally
* ACII qualification or progression towards qualification
