Overview
This opportunity is for a technically minded individual to apply fluid flow and heat transfer principles to the development of next‑generation thermal energy devices. The role is within the University of Sheffield AMRC Design & Prototyping Group, supporting a team recognised for its work in engineering design and industrial research.
Key Responsibilities
* Assist the Design team by performing hand calculations for design and checking of results.
* Use CFD and FEA packages to evaluate thermal conditions and develop thermal analysis solutions.
* Learn and use analysis software tools for thermal analysis.
* Attend and complete training courses as required.
* Self‑learn the latest forms of thermal analysis.
* Work on ideas and concepts as part of a team, generating innovative solutions to design problems.
* Present work and discuss technical issues with team members and project partners.
* Research, collate, organise and edit material, including technical reports for presentations and documents.
* Work within the AMRC Quality Management Systems.
* Carry out other duties as commensurate with the grade and remit of the post.
Person Specification
* Essential
o Knowledge and experience in CFD calculations.
o Good understanding of fluid flow physics and calculations.
o Good understanding of heat transfer calculations.
o Experience in using multiple software solutions and learning by doing.
o Interest in engineering simulation.
o Ability to change between software interfaces.
o Creation of software code.
o Effective communication skills, written and verbal.
o Experience using analysis tools within an industrial environment.
o Ability to work from first principles.
o Ability to manage own workload and organise activities.
o Ability to develop creative approaches to problem solving.
* Desirable
o Experience of adapting your own skills to new circumstances.
o Possess enthusiasm for engineering and design.
Employment Details
* Grade: 3
* Salary: £23,742.00 – £24,685.00 per annum
* Work arrangement: Full Time – 35 hours per week
* Duration: Fixed term – 12 months
* Line manager: Principal Design Engineer
