The Highways team, part of the Highways & Waster service are responsible for ensuring that Gateshead is a safe and attractive place in which people can live, work and spend free time. From waste strategy, including collection and recycling to the maintenance of our highways and street lighting. You’ve probably also noticed significant investment in the restoration of the Tyne Bridge, and our Highways team continue to play a pivotal role in that restoration project of a local landmark.

Hands-on work that keeps Gateshead moving

The role of the Roadworker is assisting the Mason Pavior/chargehand carry out Highways, drainage, and street lighting construction activities. Assisting them meet site requirements and/or completing works orders and client requests in a timely manner. Assisting with ensuring the availability and functioning of required plant and appropriate materials. Ensuring good housekeeping on site and ensuring Health and Safety standards are adhered to. This requires a flexible, responsive, and high achieving individual.

What you'll get to do

* Support the Mason Pavior/Chargehand in delivering highways, drainage, and street lighting construction and maintenance projects.
* Assist with completing works orders and client requirements, ensuring tasks are finished safely, efficiently, and on time.
* Contribute to the organisation of site resources, including ensuring plant, tools, and materials are available, functional, and safely used.
* Maintain high Health & Safety standards, including good housekeeping, PPE use, and adherence to RAMS and dynamic risk assessments.
* Carry out practical highways tasks, including paving, kerbing, patching, drainage works, ducting, street lighting installation, and street furniture maintenance.
* Help monitor and store goods, materials, and service records in a structured and GDPRcompliant manner.
* Support delivery of programmes and quality standards, ensuring work meets required specifications and frameworks.
* Assist with guiding and supporting team members and contractors, contributing to motivation and informal onthejob training.
* Ensure safe and correct use of all machinery, equipment, and tools, reporting issues promptly

What you'll bring

* NVQ or equivalent in relevant trade background.
* Current CSCS Health and Safety Compliance Card or equivalent
* Hold relevant skill and H&S qualifications to operate relevant plant and machinery.
* Hold or be willing to work towards: Streetworks, Water Jetting, Trenching & Shoring, Confined Spaces
* Sling Loading from a vehicle, or be willing to work towards
* A broad knowledge of highways works including traffic management, drainage, street lighting and signage.
* Trade background with relevant on-site work experience.
* Experience of working with a wide range of highways materials.
* Experience operating relevant plant and machinery.
* Working in a self-disciplined manner to tight deadlines whilst maintaining a high standard of workmanship
