Committee officer

Swindon
Swindon Borough Council
Committee officer
Posted: 10 October
Offer description

At Swindon Borough Council, we want our town to be the best it can be. Our ambitious vision is supported by realistic transformation programmes, with the people of Swindon at their heart. Because that’s who we’re doing it for – the communities and businesses that make our town great. As part of the Council, you’ll support a friendly local authority making decisions with real impact. It’s all for better public services. Better processes. And a better quality of life, for everyone. Join us, and Swindon will be better with you.

Your next role

Being a Committee Officer will require you to manage Cabinet, regulatory and Overview and Scrutiny functions. You will also provide committee administration services, staff the education appeals and work closely with colleagues at all levels to ensure the support of Councillors and officers is of the highest standard.

We need someone with experience in a democratic services environment, or a fast learner with transferable skills. Educated to degree level or with equivalent relevant experience, you will be a confident individual with excellent work prioritisation capabilities. You will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and the confidence to support Committees and other meetings by providing advice and producing reports and briefing notes. Knowledge of administering quasi-judicial appeals would be an advantage.

You will be dynamic and flexible in your approach and enjoy working in a demanding environment. You will be politically astute, and able to work effectively as an individual, planning and delivering your own work programme without direction. You will be part of a highly effective and capable team, which supports the local authority’s governance in respect of decision-making processes.

You will be willing to work unsociable hours and be available to clerk evening meetings (after 6.00pm for which flexi time is accrued) usually at the Civic Offices and occasionally at external venues in the borough. When not required for meetings, hybrid working is available.

You will need to demonstrate excellent organisation skills, be adept at diary management, and capable of foreseeing and dealing with deadlines. Experience of Modern.gov / Issue Manager and remote meeting technology (such as Microsoft Teams) is desirable.

You must be fluent in the English language (as a requirement of Part 7 of the Immigration Act “for the effective performance of a customer-facing role”).

Your next package

As an employee, you will receive a diverse and exciting environment in which to work, encouraging creativity and innovation whilst recognising the need to support ongoing personal development and a flexible work life balance.

For Swindon to thrive in the future, we need to lay the foundations now. It’s why our regeneration and transformation programmes are already underway. So, you’ll be joining us at an exciting time on our journey. We’ll look to you to share your knowledge, influence decisions and drive real, positive change. With your contributions, we’ll achieve our vision of a prosperous, re-vitalised Swindon together. And you’ll be proud to say it was made better with you.
