PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: Up to £62,250 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
As a Senior Systems Engineer, you'll play a key role in delivering and maintaining these platforms. You'll work across the full lifecycle—from planning and design to implementation, testing, and support. You'll also help improve how we work by introducing new tools, automating processes, and sharing your expertise with the team.
This role is based at our Salford office, with a flexible mix of home working, office time, and occasional visits to data centres. Some out-of-hours work is expected.
WHY JOIN THE TEAM
The BBC's Technical Operations (TechOps) team is responsible for building and managing the IT infrastructure that supports our broadcast and enterprise systems. This includes both virtual and physical platforms hosted in BBC and external data centres across London, Salford, and other global locations.
As a Senior Systems Engineer, you will play a key role in supporting the technical roadmap and maintenance for the BBC Technical Operations (TechOps), hosting Infrastructure and Platform Engineering Team's virtual and physical IT infrastructure platforms. Your responsibilities will focus on collaborating with engineering teams in the planning, design, development, integration, commissioning, testing and operation of infrastructure systems, ensuring improvements are met in the operating environment.
YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT
* Design, build, and maintain secure, scalable infrastructure (virtual and physical).
* Collaborate with engineers and project teams to deliver reliable solutions.
* Automate tasks using scripting tools (PowerShell, Bash, Python).
* Integrate monitoring tools and troubleshoot to ensure performance.
* Create clear technical documentation and share knowledge with the team.
* Stay ahead of tech trends and mentor colleagues.
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
* Infrastructure & Virtualisation: Hands‑on experience with HPE servers, Synergy systems and VMware vSphere (ESXi, vCenter, NSX‑T, vSAN), Nutanix.
* Storage & Backup: Knowledge of SAN/NFS storage (HPE Nimble, Alletra, 3Par; TinTri VMstore and Pure Flash Array) and backup tools like Veeam, StoreOnce, AWS S3, Cohesity.
* OS & Networking: Skilled in Windows Server, Linux (Ubuntu/RHEL), Active Directory, DNS, and network security policies.
* Automation & DevOps: Proficient in scripting (PowerShell, Bash, Python) and tools like Ansible, Terraform, GitHub, and Octopus Deploy.
