Position at Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru / Natural Resources Wales

Join our South Central Waste Regulation Team as a permanent Tackling Waste Crime Officer.

About The Role

Are you passionate about protecting the environment and ready to take on a challenging and rewarding role? We’re offering an exciting opportunity to work on a permanent basis as a Tackling Waste Crime Officer within a virtual, centrally organised team that supports the Welsh Government’s Action Plan to tackle waste crime across Wales.

You will contribute to innovative ways of identifying and tackling illegal waste crime, lead or support investigations, provide evidence for enforcement action, analyse data and solve complex problems. You will work with South Central Waste Regulation and Enforcement Officers, partner organisations (including police and DVSA), and other stakeholders. You may be required to work out of area as prioritised by the Tackling Waste Crime Lead Specialist Advisor.

In addition to investigative duties, you will respond swiftly and effectively to environmental incidents, including illegal waste activities, as part of NRW’s duty as a Category 1 responder under the Civil Contingencies Act. To support this, you must hold a valid full UK licence to drive NRW fleet vehicles (cars and vans).

Successful applicants will be subject to a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. Appointments are normally made within 4 to 8 weeks of the closing date.

* Create evidence for enforcement action.
* Analyse data and identify trends.
* Collaborate with enforcement officers, partners, and stakeholders.
* Respond to environmental incidents as a Category 1 responder.
* Maintain legal and regulatory knowledge and apply it in practice.

Qualifications

* Strong communication and influencing skills.
* Confidence, motivation and the ability to work independently.
* Experience in investigation, law‑enforcement or environmental protection is desirable.
* Valid full UK driving licence (capable of driving fleet vehicles).
* Current DBS check (or willingness to obtain one).

Benefits & Working Conditions

* Flexible working with a suitable hybrid pattern agreed at appointment.
* Remote interview process via Teams.
* Professional training and development opportunities.
* Opportunity to make a real environmental impact across South Central Wales.
