Senior Core Transport and Turbulence Modeller

Full-time role in the Division: Plasma Science and Fusion Operations; Department: Plasma Physics. Salary: £57,117 (inclusive of Specialist Allowance) plus excellent benefits including an outstanding pension.

Role overview: As Senior Core Transport and Turbulence Modeller, you will lead, propose, and conduct turbulence and transport analyses using advanced transport codes and integrated modelling frameworks (e.g., JINTRAC and TRANSP), and state-of-the-art core turbulence and gyrokinetic codes. You will perform analysis for existing and future tokamaks, including MAST-U and the STEP project, and direct experiments on MAST-U to validate and guide the development of reduced transport models and predictive core transport simulations.

Key Responsibilities:

* Provide scientific leadership in developing and validating turbulence models to produce predictive simulations of core plasma transport in support of the STEP programme.
* Maintain and guide the development of Prokinetics, the Python library used for gyrokinetic code analysis.
* Direct, propose and execute experiments on MAST-U, particularly in the area of the role.
* Act as the scientific point of contact for core plasma modelling on MAST-U.
* Nurture and grow existing collaborations, and seek new opportunities for national and international collaborations.
* Provide guidance and expertise, directing the future of transport and turbulence analysis at UKAEA.
* Report results at science and progress meetings; disseminate results through presentations, conferences, and peer-reviewed journal papers.
* Guide and mentor Early Career researchers in topics related to turbulence and transport modelling.

Qualifications and experience:

* PhD-level research experience in plasma physics or a related discipline; post-doctoral experience in plasma modelling.
* Proven ability to conduct independent research with a track record of high-quality outputs in areas relevant to the role, including:
* Core turbulent transport models based on gyrokinetics and/or reduced quasilinear models;
* Heat, particle and momentum sources;
* Transport analysis and integrated modelling of tokamak plasma scenarios.
* Ability to interact with physicists and understand their requirements.
* Good oral and written communication skills.
* Strong teamwork and outward-facing work ethos, collaborating with scientists from around the world.

Other requirements and workplace details:

* Role can be based at Culham, Oxfordshire.
* Some onsite work may be required; the organisation supports flexible working arrangements where possible.
* Employees may be required to complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) including DBS checks and possibly an open-source data search.

UKAEA’s commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion is emphasised; applications from underrepresented groups are encouraged and appointments are made on merit.

Note: Vacancies are generally advertised for 4 weeks but may close earlier if a large number of applications are received.
