Rehabilitation in the Armed Forces is delivered in three types of treatment centres:
Primary Care Rehabilitation Facilities (PCRFs):
Patients may be referred to see a physiotherapist at a PCRF, usually based at Defence Primary Healthcare medical facilities. The physiotherapist conducts a detailed assessment within 10 working days and provides treatment and rehabilitation. Many PCRFs have an Exercise Rehabilitation Instructor who can also provide injury-specific exercise therapy and advice on gradual return to fitness.
Regional Rehabilitation Units (RRUs):
If a condition cannot be managed at PCRF level, the patient is referred to an RRU in the UK. RRUs offer specialist assessments through Multi-disciplinary Injury Assessment Clinics staffed by doctors, physiotherapists, and ERIs. They utilize medical imaging for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning, including pain management options.
Stanford Hall - The Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre (DMRC):
The DMRC provides consultant-led rehabilitation services for military patients with serious musculoskeletal injuries, neurological injuries, and complex trauma, aiming to maximize functional capability and quality of life, whether returning to military service or transitioning to civilian life.
