Axle Haulage is a leading provider of nationwide construction, Rail and Civil Engineering transport solutions, we are a GOLD FORS company operating a fleet of f rigid flat, rigid Hiab and flat articulated vehicles from our Depot in Hockliffe. We are also an employee-owned trust, operating since 1988.
The Role
We're seeking an experienced Transport Manager to lead our fleet operations, ensuring robust compliance with UK transport legislation and internal company standards. A working knowledge of FORS (Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme) will be advantageous.
Key Responsibilities:
* Guarantee full compliance with Operator's Licence obligations—monitor driver's hours, manage vehicle maintenance, oversee defect reporting, and maintain accurate records.
* Lead driver recruitment, training programmes, and performance assessments.
* Monitor and optimise fuel and AdBlue usage for cost efficiency.
* Track and document vehicle emissions data.
* Collaborate with suppliers, maintenance providers, and regulatory bodies as needed.
* Uphold Health & Safety, environmental, and quality standards across the fleet.
* Oversee accident investigations, defect management, and routine vehicle inspections.
* Prepare, analyse, and report on transport KPIs and fleet performance metrics.
* Develop and implement logistics strategies to improve service quality and reduce costs.
* Coordinate with other departments to align logistics activities with overall business objectives.
* Manage driver tablets and the SOTI mobile device management system.
About You
* CPC in Road Haulage (National) – essential.
* Demonstrated experience in a transport management or equivalent role.
* Deep understanding of UK transport regulations—including driver hours and tachograph requirements.
* Outstanding organisational, communication, and leadership skills.
* Confident user of transport management systems, Microsoft Office, and strong overall IT proficiency.
* Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
* A proactive approach with the ability to drive improvements within the transport function.
