The School Nurse plays a vital role in maintaining the health and well-being of pupils in a boarding school setting. They provide expert medical care, manage day-to-day health needs, and respond swiftly to emergencies. The nurse builds trust with pupils, supporting their physical and emotional health while offering guidance on wellness and self-care. They collaborate with parents, staff, and external healthcare providers to ensure each student receives individual attention and care. By promoting health education and fostering a safe environment, the nurse contributes to a supportive community where students can thrive both academically and personally.

We are seeking a full-time nurse (48 hours per week) for shift work across a 24/7 Health Centre, which could include day time hours, evenings (including overnight) and weekends. They will work alongside the Lead Nurse, nurses, GP and the wider school team.

The Health Centre

The Health Centre is a busy professional department that operates from a dedicated facility in the heart of the school site. It is open 24/7 during term time, catering for the needs of pupils and staff during the school day, and supporting the needs of boarders and the wider resident team at other times. The Lead Nurse is supported by two full time nurses along with bank nurses in delivering effective care and support to the wider school community. Boarders benefit from visiting GP clinics twice weekly.

The nursing team works closely with the Deputy Head Pastoral and the pastoral leads to ensure we continue to meet the needs of all of our pupils and provide effective, targeted and appropriate care and advice to our young people and their families.


Role Description


This is a full time (48 hours per week), term-time role. This post will form part of a shift system which could include day time hours, evenings, including overnight, and weekends.


Key Responsibilities

* assist in the running of the Health Centre, supported by another nurse
* liaise with the School’s multi-disciplinary team to ensure the smooth running of the Health Centre through a multi disciplinary team approach
* provide on-site medical care for both ‘drop in’ pupils (and occasionally staff) and for those with on-going issues and concerns
* offer support and advice to our Prep team should a need arise
* triage, treat or refer pupils and staff presenting at the Health Centre in line with the NMC code of Conduct, whilst operating within your capabilities and to treat and advise pupils and staff with common minor ailments
* administer First Aid to pupils and staff in emergencies
* be aware of pupils’ physical and emotional needs, to be able to talk to them sensitively and to know when other professional help may be needed
* provide total care of in-patients in conjunction with other nurses and day matrons/boarding staff; these in-patients may be based in the Health Centre or in a boarding house
* liaise with the GP Surgery and keep pupil medical files up to date and accurate, ensuring that medical information on pupils is transferred accurately and in a timely manner into the relevant management databases
* manage relevant school immunisations as required
* manage the twic e-weekly GP surgeries on site and refer boarders to these surgeries as required
* organise medicals for all new boarders
* maintain an up-to-date knowledge of chronic diseases
* develop, implement and monitor clear healthcare plans for pupils with chronic conditions
* implement clear lines of communication with the Lead Nurse and/or Deputy Head Pastoral
* immediately make the Lead Nurse (in her absence the Deputy Head Pastoral/or relevant Head of Section) aware of any emergency situations
* provide any other reasonable duties as may be required from time to time by the Lead Nurse, Deputy Head Pastoral and Headmistress


Person Specification


Qualifications and Experience

* professional Nursing qualification; a state registered nurse with ‘hands on’ experience in children and young people’s health
* knowledge and experience of providing First Aid
* experienced in the care of young people including those with chronic illnesses and in providing care and support for young people with mental health needs
* experience of working in a school
* familiarity with, and good understanding of, safeguarding procedures
* up to date with mandatory training such as BLS, Anaphylaxis, Safeguarding Level 3


Personal Attributes and Skills

* good organisation and administration skills
* excellent written and verbal communication skills at all levels
* sensitivity and empathy
* able to adapt quickly and have the flexibility to deal with the changing needs of a busy health centre
* able to cope calmly and effectively with emergencies when they arise
* basic IT skills (Microsoft office and/or Google applications), familiar with using a database and video-conferencing software
* a willingness to undertake training to keep knowledge of mental and physical health needs and evidence based practice up to date
* sympathy with the values and ethos of the School


Terms of Appointment


Type of contract

Full time (48 hours per week), shift patterns across 24/7


Pension

Contributory membership of the School’s Support Staff Pension Scheme with a School contribution of up to 9.95 per cent upon successful completion of six months’ service.


Fee Remission

In accordance with the School’s policy, which may be subject to change, up to 50 per cent fee remission for pupils attending Headington Rye Oxford and up to 20 per cent fee remission for boys attending Magdalen College School (under a reciprocal agreement) and subject to the terms of their policy. Fee remission is calculated on the number of weeks and hours worked and is pro rata for part-time staff who work at least 50 per cent of a normal working week.

£38,448 per annum
