Overview
Join Connect Plus Services as a Tunnels Maintenance Technician and play a key role in maintaining the safety, reliability, and performance of tunnel infrastructure across the M25 network. In this technically focused role, you will support the operation of M25 tunnels by delivering planned and reactive maintenance across electrical, electronic, mechanical, and building systems. You will operate under the direction of the Tunnel Maintenance Manager and Supervisors, contributing to the upkeep of critical assets under normal and emergency conditions. This role is suitable for a skilled and safety-conscious technician who contributes to network resilience.
Location and Working Arrangements
This role is based from CPS Hatfield and South Mimms Depots, with regular work across the M25 tunnel network and occasional travel to other locations. You will attend incidents, support planned maintenance, and participate in standby and callout rota for Holmesdale, Bell Common, and Hatfield tunnels. A full UK driving licence is required, and you must be willing to work in confined spaces, at height, and in operational tunnel environments.
What you’ll be doing
* Report to the Tunnel Maintenance Supervisor and be conversant in the operation of electrical and mechanical plant within M25 tunnels, including under emergency conditions.
* Operate systems both locally and remotely and carry out safe electrical isolations in line with approved procedures.
* Undertake planned maintenance and defect repairs across equipment including switchgear, transformers, pumps, fans, variable speed drives, lighting systems, and control gear; complete daily worksheets and maintenance records.
* Read technical drawings, perform fault finding, and complete repairs independently where appropriate; deliver civil, electrical, and mechanical maintenance within your competency, including out-of-trade tasks as required under supervision.
* Operate vehicles for maintenance, ensure health and safety requirements are met, and maintain vehicles, plant, and equipment in safe condition with routine checks and driver records.
* Attend incidents and work in accordance with policies to support safe and timely clearance of hazards, promote Connect Plus Services values, pursue Zero Harm, support sustainability, and comply with the Balfour Beatty Electrical Safe System of Work.
* Collaborate with internal teams and external partners (including National Highways and specialist subcontractors) to ensure high-quality service delivery.
Who we’re looking for
You will demonstrate strong customer service, professionalism, ability to work under pressure, clear communication, teamwork, and a strong commitment to safety. You will have completed a recognised electrical apprenticeship and hold qualifications such as City and Guilds Level 3 and the 18th Edition. Authorised Person status is desirable, with training provided as needed. You will hold or be willing to obtain certifications in MEWPs, confined spaces, inspection and testing (C&G 2391), and CSCS or ECS; support to qualify as an Approved Person under the BB Electrical Safe System of Work for HV and LV activities. You will bring experience in fault finding from schematic drawings and broad exposure to electrical, electronic, and mechanical maintenance; pump maintenance is an advantage. Knowledge of current health and safety legislation and ability to carry out electrical installation work to regulations are required. Previous experience in road tunnels or building maintenance is beneficial.
