The Opportunity
In this role, you will be responsible for the overall achievement of the service, ensuring that directorate and corporate objectives are achieved whilst leading the area to deliver their main goal of passenger transport.
You will be responsible for the teams that make up Transport Co-ordination and will need to lead, motivate and influence the teams to ensure that the service is delivered. You will also have direct responsibility for a budget and spend of more than £35 million.
Effective communication within the team, as well as developing and maintaining effective relationships with both internal colleagues and external partners is a big part of the role. It will also be important for you to ensure that political and strategic impacts are reviewed and part of the decision-making process. This is particularly important given the transition locally to create a Sussex wide mayoral combined authority.
About you
To be successful in this role, some of the key skills and experience required include:
* Demonstrating significant experience of making sound decisions and problem solving whilst ensuring awareness of the bigger service impact and the political/strategic impact of these decisions is vital.
* Providing detailed expert, technical and management advice and being able to challenge ways of working to improve service and delivery.
* Effective Research and Planning skills to support problem solving and creation of solutions.
* Highly effective communication skills enabling you to persuade, influence and negotiate on challenging or sensitive topics to a wide range of stakeholders and partners.
* Excellent people and performance management skills to ensure objectives and timescales are set, reviewed and delivered in accordance with plans and policies.
* Ability and experience of leading teams and inspiring them to deliver an outstanding service is essential.
* Experience of managing a budget and decision making in relation to high level spending.

About us
The Transport Co-ordination Group is responsible for arranging diverse passenger transport to the residents of West Sussex. The group delivers home to school transport, vulnerable adults day service trips, bus services, community transport, the School Crossing Patrol service and provides concessionary schemes for free bus travel for older and disabled adults alongside reduced rates for younger people in the community. The team is made up of over 400 staff who ensure these services are delivered daily to the people in the community.
The team also takes a leading role in the West Sussex Enhanced Partnership, where they work with Bus companies and transport providers to deliver the bus improvement plan, which improves services for local residents and visitors to West Sussex.
