Role: Social Work Assistant
Location: Glenfield, Leicestershire City Council
Pay Rate: £15 per hour
Work pattern: Monday to Thursday 8.30-17.00, Friday 8.30-16.30 – there may be opportunities for an earlier or later start.
This role involves First Response and Screening, handling safeguarding concerns, assessing risk, and sharing information when reports of abuse or neglect are made. You will work with social workers, professionals from children’s social care, targeted family help, police, health, and other agencies to support vulnerable children.
We seek committed and collaborative individuals eager to make a difference. This position offers a dynamic, modern environment for skill development. Your work will contribute to preventing abuse, safeguarding children, and providing timely family support.
You will be essential in screening, managing telephone calls and emails related to Children’s Social Care, and urgent police referrals. Supervision will be provided by qualified social work staff monthly, with participation in a social work POD for reflective and developmental meetings.
Requirements include adaptability, resilience under pressure, excellent communication skills, and a sensitive approach to inquiries from professionals and the public.
Responsibilities include:
1. Providing telephone advice and support to families, including directing them to self-help resources and promoting their use.
2. Following scripts and guidance to ensure accurate advice, and escalating complex needs to a Social Worker/Team Manager.
3. Sharing information about available services for self-referral or open access.
4. Offering telephone support and guidance on behavior strategies.
5. Taking messages and updates for Social Workers.
6. Supporting professionals in understanding service thresholds and referral pathways.
7. Maintaining awareness of local, county-wide, and national services for children and families, understanding service thresholds and eligibility.
Experience in Children’s Services and Customer Services, along with strong ICT skills and familiarity with Mosaic, is desirable.
