St Albans Cathedral is seeking to appoint a new Architect, to support and guide the Chapter in its care for and conservation of, the fabric of the Cathedral on a five-year term, with the potential to extend. The Cathedral Architect acts as the professional technical advisor to Chapter on all matters for which it has statutory and non-statutory architectural responsibility as required under The Cathedrals Measure 2021. To ensure that Chapter is appropriately advised, the Architect will need to be suitably qualified and be able to demonstrate their expertise through professional practice. They must have a strong technical skill set with proven experience in the conservation and repair of historic buildings. The post holder must have experience of church repairs and re-ordering, and hold professional conservation accreditation. They need to have a developed understanding of the liturgical, mission and other purposes of a Cathedral. St Albans Cathedral is a Grade 1 Scheduled national monument and home to two medieval shrines, several world-class medieval wall paintings and an amazing mix of architectural styles that bear witness to many centuries of its life, first as a monastic Abbey and now as a Cathedral. It is the oldest site of continuous Christian worship in Britain and the core of the existing building dates back over 900 years.
