University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust – Medical Examiner Officer

We are looking to recruit a Medical Examiner Officer to support and develop the Medical Examiner Service, based at the Royal Derby Hospital and the Queen’s Hospital Burton sites. The role requires excellent communication and organisational skills, advanced IT literacy, and a strong understanding of medical terminology and the death certification process.
Main duties
* Provide a professional, sensitive and compassionate service to bereaved relatives and callers, often dealing with distressing and emotive situations.
* Work closely with clinical and non‑clinical staff, Medical Examiners, the Bereavement Office and the Coroner’s Office to scrutinise deaths occurring in the hospital.
* Carry out death certification duties in line with the Coroners and Justice Act 2009 and the Department of Health’s Death Certification Reforms Medical Examiner system.
* Operate flexibly between the Royal Derby Hospital and Queen’s Hospital Burton sites as required.
* Work weekends and bank holidays on a rota basis.
* Maintain accurate IT records using systems such as Access, Word, Excel and Lorenzo.
* Complete the Medical Examiner Officer Core e‑Learning modules before appointment.
Qualifications
* Educated to degree level or equivalent advanced-level knowledge.
* Completed e‑Learning Medical Examiner Officer training.
* Commitment to lifelong learning and personal development.
Knowledge & experience
* Experience working with bereaved families in sensitive and emotional situations.
* Knowledge of the Coroners and Justice Act 2009 where it relates to death certification.
* Detailed knowledge of clinical terminology.
* Experience working in a healthcare or related setting with multidisciplinary teams and across organisational boundaries.
* Awareness of equality and diversity issues surrounding death certification and arrangements for various faith groups.
* Working knowledge of the Department of Health’s Death Certification Reforms Medical Examiner system.
Skills
* Effective teamwork with multidisciplinary teams.
* Ability to organise work around changing demands and fluctuating workloads.
* Competent with IT software including Access, Word, Excel, and Lorenzo.
* Ability to meet deadlines and achieve agreed objectives.
