Overview
Biomedical Scientist position within Pathology - Blood Sciences at Lincoln County Hospital. Employed grade depends on candidates, qualifications, experience and potential. After a period of training, the successful applicant will work in all sections of the laboratory: Clinical Chemistry, Haematology, Coagulation and Blood Transfusion. The laboratory’s current analytical equipment includes Roche Cobas c8000, Sysmex XN 2000, Werfen ACL TOP and Bio-Rad IH-500.
Requirements include good communication and keyboard skills and the ability to work under pressure. Although part of a team of Biomedical Scientists, once fully trained, candidates should be able to work independently. Participation in the 24-hour shift service is a requirement of the post. Training within the post will be provided if necessary, and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is encouraged.
Main duties
Biomedical Scientists carry out a range of laboratory and scientific tests to support diagnosis and treatment of disease. The successful candidate will work as part of the multidisciplinary Blood Sciences laboratory after appropriate training and completion of the relevant in-house competencies. They will use either automated instrumentation or manual techniques to perform routine and specialist investigations on samples in accordance with Path Links Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Responsibilities include routine maintenance on complex, high-value laboratory equipment, troubleshooting and rectifying issues, and/or seeking appropriate assistance. The work is varied, practical and analytical.
The main responsibilities of the successful candidate will be:
* Processing of pathology samples
* Entering patient requests and results using a LIMS
* Performing routine and complex pathology investigations
* Ability to accurately use a calibrated pipette
* Loading/unloading and filing of samples
* Use and maintenance of automated analytical platforms
* Technical validation of patient results using various laboratory middleware (B5/B6)
* Clinical authorisation of patient results (B6 only)
* Interpretation of internal and external controls
* Day-to-day supervisory responsibility over lower-grade support staff
* Communicating results and other queries with service users by telephone or other means

Essential
* Relevant UK NHS laboratory experience
* BSc in Biomedical Sciences (IBMS accredited degree or IBMS accredited equivalent)
* Registration with, or eligibility to register with, HCPC (desirable)
Desirable
* Experience in all Blood science disciplines (Haematology, Transfusion and Clinical Chemistry)
* Training experience; evidence of teamwork and overall suitability
* Have or be near to completing the IBMS Registration Portfolio; IBMS Specialist Portfolio
