We are lookingto recruit a motivated and enthusiastic Band 5 registered childrens nurse tojoin a flexible, friendly and well supported team; delivering safe, effective,high quality care to the children and the families who attend Sunderland EyeInfirmary. Haygarth Childrens Ward comprises of a 4 bedded childrens ward whichis staffed by two dedicated Paediatric Nurses who follow the patient journeyfrom pre-assessment to post-operative discharge.
Main duties of the job
On Haygarth, we care for children;predominantly for day-case surgery with a variety of ophthalmic conditionswhich include Strabismus (Squint), Blocked Tear Ducts, Chalazion, Ptosis,Cataracts, Vitrectomy and emergency admissions due to trauma.
Thesuccessful candidate will:
Havethe ability to work collaboratively as part of a team as well as working upontheir own initiative and develop skills specific to ophthalmology.
Providethe highest standard of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluatingcare without direct supervision.
Delivercare and support throughout the childs journey at Sunderland Eye Infirmary,from outpatient clinic appointments, pre-assessment through to post-operativedischarge. Children and families may have a variety of ophthalmic conditions aswell as physical, mental and social complexities; it is essential that the postholder is sensitive to the emotional needs of the children and their familiesrequiring admission to hospital.
Beable to run pre-admission assessment clinics (PAAC), assist withIntravenous Fluorescein Angiogram for paediatrics in medical photography andvenepuncture.service covers there is an increasing need todo pre-assessments via the telephone.
The Wardis open Mon-Fri (Excluding Bank Holidays). Flexibility isrequired, on the rare occasion, that there is an emergency admission, as thenurses will stay until the child is discharged or transferred which could be upto 8pm.

Qualifications
Essential
1. NMC Registered Childrens Nurse, or evidence of qualification if newly qualified
2. Diploma in health related study or equivalent appropriate qualification

3. Degree in nursing studies or healthcare related subject (UK equivalent)
4. Mentorship certificate/Practice Assessor training or demonstrable equivalent experience
Skills and Knowledge
Essential
5. Ability to provide and receive complex, sensitive or contentious information
6. Able to work without supervision
7. Competent in the use of IT such as Microsoft Office
8. Evidence of CPD
9. Knowledge of national health and social care policy
10. Knowledge of evidence based guidelines NICE guidelines, NPSA alerts, current nursing legislation
