About the role We’re looking for a high-calibre Staff Software Engineer to lead and evolve our frontend, shaping how legal professionals interact with complex documents. At Definely, we build products like Cascade and Enhance that help lawyers understand, navigate, and act on contracts. A core challenge is translating complex AI capabilities into intuitive, high-quality user experiences that fit seamlessly into how people work. We’re looking for someone who is highly product-minded, intellectually curious, and motivated by solving meaningful user problems. In this role, you’ll set the direction for our frontend, owning how we design, build, and scale user-facing systems, while contributing across the stack where needed. You’ll work closely with product, design, and engineering leadership to shape both what we build and how we build it. As a Staff Engineer, you’ll drive technical and product decisions, raise the bar for quality, and play a key role in evolving our architecture and frontend strategy as we scale. What you’ll do Own and evolve our frontend architecture, setting direction for how we build scalable, high-quality user interfaces Lead the development of user-facing features end-to-end, from shaping the problem with product and design to delivery and iteration Translate complex AI capabilities into intuitive, performant, and reliable user experiences Work across the stack where needed using TypeScript and Python, but with a primary focus on frontend excellence Drive improvements in performance, usability, and overall product quality Contribute to technical strategy and architectural decisions across the engineering team Raise the bar for engineering standards, including code quality, testing, and maintainability Mentor and support other engineers, helping to elevate frontend capability across the team What you’ll bring: Significant experience building and scaling complex, user-facing web applications Deep expertise in modern frontend development (React, TypeScript) and strong understanding of frontend architecture Strong product mindset, you think in terms of user problems and outcomes, not just implementation Experience working closely with product and design to shape solutions, not just deliver them Ability to take ownership of ambiguous problems and drive them through to impact Good understanding of backend systems and ability to work across the stack when needed Experience contributing to or leading architectural decisions Strong communication skills and ability to influence across teams We'll be lucky if you: Have led or significantly shaped frontend architecture in a scaling product Have experience building AI-powered or data-heavy user experiences Enjoy working in product-driven, fast-paced environments Care deeply about usability, performance, and craft in frontend development Have experience mentoring or acting as a technical leader across teams What we offer: Competitive salary bonus Share options Quarterly team socials & annual company offsite We can offer hybrid or remote working for this role 1 month “work from anywhere” ️ 25 days holiday bank holidays Take your birthday off £750 annual learning & development budget Private healthcare (incl. dental & optical) Enhanced parental leave Additional perks: Cycle to Work, Workplace Nursery salary sacrifice scheme, and top-quality equipment About Definely At Definely, we’re on a mission to simplify the way legal professionals access and understand complex information in legal documents.
