Senior Software Engineer – Groceries (Online & Customer)
We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join Asdas Online & Customer department, working on our Groceries website and app. You will provide technical leadership and engineering oversight within your team to enable the delivery of high-quality, scalable, secure products. This position requires attendance at Asda House in Leeds for a minimum of three days per week. Responsibilities
* Technical Design & Delivery
o Design and deliver high‑quality technical solutions that align with agreed architectural standards and patterns.
o Work closely with Product and Architects to translate business requirements into well‑designed, scalable and performant solutions.
o Lead by example through hands‑on contribution to code, reviews, testing and production support where required.
* Leadership & Mentorship
o Act as the senior technical authority within squads, providing direction, guidance and support to engineers.
o Mentor and coach Associate and Apprentice engineers to raise overall capability, improve engineering practices, and support career development.
o Balance hands‑on engineering with leadership responsibilities to ensure consistent, high‑quality delivery across teams.
o Support Engineering Managers with technical input into planning, risk management and delivery decisions.
* Governance, Best Practices & Quality
o Champion engineering best practices, including code quality, testing, CI/CD, security and operational readiness.
o Promote a DevSecOps mindset, encouraging ownership, autonomy and accountability for the full software lifecycle.
o Ensure quality, reliability and security are built into solutions from design through to production.
* Collaboration & Community
o Actively contribute to engineering and agile communities of practice, helping to shape and embed shared standards, patterns and principles.
o Collaborate across teams and domains to reduce duplication, encourage reuse and improve consistency.
o Share knowledge and learning to strengthen the wider engineering organisation.
* Innovation & Strategy
o Evaluate and recommend tools, technologies and practices that improve engineering effectiveness and developer experience.
o Drive continuous improvement in delivery, quality and operational maturity.
o Stay current with industry trends and apply relevant insights pragmatically within the organisation.
* Hybrid working model – a minimum of three days per week in the office, with the possibility of additional days for meetings or collaboration as required.
Qualifications
* Experience building scalable solutions according to software architecture and design principles.
* Strong knowledge of software development best practices, including code reviews, testing, and CI/CD pipelines.
* Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
* Proven experience leading software development teams in the delivery of complex projects.
* Experience with distributed systems, microservices architecture, and cloud‑based solutions.
