Clinical Teaching Team Lead

The Clinical Teaching Team Lead (CTTL) plays a pivotalleadership role in the delivery, coordination, and continuous improvement ofundergraduate medical education across County Durham and Darlington NHSFoundation Trust.

The post-holder will manage clinical educators and teachingfellows, oversee MBBS rotations, and ensure teaching aligns with GMC anduniversity standards. They will support student wellbeing, lead on qualityimprovement in education, and collaborate with local and regional partners toenhance learning environments.

Main duties of the job

As Clinical Teaching Team Lead, you will play a central rolein shaping the future medical workforce by leading a dedicated team ofeducators and fostering a dynamic, supportive learning environment for medicalstudents across the Trust.

Youll drive innovation in teaching, support theprofessional growth of education staff, and ensure students are well-preparedfor clinical practice. Working closely with university partners and clinicalteams, youll contribute to curriculum development, promote interprofessionalcollaboration, and champion student wellbeing.

This is a tactical and hands-on leadershipopportunity for someone passionate about high-quality clinical education andimproving patient care through workforce excellence.

We provide hospital services from two acute sites - Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.

Job responsibilities

The Clinical Teaching Team Lead (CTTL) role entailsproviding both tactical and operational leadership for undergraduate medicaleducation across County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust. Thisincludes:

Leading amultidisciplinary teaching team, including Clinical Teaching Fellows, nurseeducators, and academic F2 doctors.

CoordinatingMBBS student placements across multiple hospital sites in line with medicalschool and GMC standards.

Designing,delivering, and evaluating teaching programmes, including bedside, classroom,simulation, and digital learning.

Supportingstudent wellbeing, providing pastoral care, and managing sensitive issues suchas academic difficulty or safeguarding.

Collaboratingwith internal and external partners, including universities, clinical leads,NHS Education England, and GP practices.

Drivingquality improvement and innovation in education delivery and assessmentmethods.

Managingteaching resources and governance, including health & safety, assettracking, and workforce planning.

Its a leadership role that combines educationalexcellence, operational oversight, and hands-on teaching to ensure a safe,effective, and enriching experience for medical students


Person Specification


Experience

* Significant clinical experience within a relevant field
* Highly developed specialist knowledge of education acquired through experience and study
* Experience of learner mentorship, education experience, clinical teaching and providing support and feedback to a range of learners
* Proven experience of delivering clinical skills training & support in a variety of settings
* Leadership experience within a clinical or educational field


Special Skills & Knowledge

* Evidence of excellent communication and interpersonal skills with all levels of professional staff.
* Ability and evidence of working independently and across disciplines as a member of a multi-disciplinary team.
* Ability to work flexibly and manage competing priorities.
* Consistently high attention to detail and quality of work.
* Ability to work in a busy and varied work environment and respond to change
* Self-motivated and able to motivate others.
* Proficient keyboard skills, use of Microsoft PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel and other IT skills relating to teaching. Ability to use AV equipment used in education delivery.
* Ability to concentrate for prolonged periods of time and to deal with unpredictable work patterns.
* Knowledge of General Medical Council Good Medical Practice and standards relating to undergraduate and postgraduate training.
* Knowledge of contemporary issues in medical education.
* Detailed understanding of curriculum development including the generation of learning outcomes.
* Proven skills in delivery, facilitation development and evaluation of training programmes.
* Demonstrate the ability to engage and build effective relationships in stakeholder organisations.


Special Requirements

* Able to travel across Trust sites to meet the requirements of the post.


Qualifications

* Registered healthcare professional e.g. nurse, midwife.
* Degree in nursing/midwifery/other relevant subject or equivalent
* Certificate in teaching and assessing
* Physical skills assessment training (or equivalent) or willing to undertake within first year of the role
* Evidence of study at level 7 (Masters) level e.g. Postgraduate certificate of clinical/medical education/PGCE or willingness to undertake a Postgraduate Certificate of Medical Education within the first three years of the role
* Diploma or Masters in Medical/Clinical Education or equivalent


Statutory Registration

* NMC or equivalent
