The successful applicant will join the red cell team at UCLH and help to drive and develop this key service.
The role will involve the inpatient and outpatient care of patients with red cell disorders. While this is primarily an adult post, there is scope for participation in a paediatric red cell clinic, if the candidate has a paediatric interest. Similarly, there is also scope for developing the transition element, for young adults moving from the paediatric service into the adult one.
The role will involve up to three red cell clinics per week, either fully within the adult service or with an alternate week paediatric clinic, as above. The appointee will be expected to attend the weekly red cell MDT.
Attending and on call will be for the adult red cell service at UCLH. This will involve direct care of inpatients with red cell disorders as well as answering queries around outpatients and daycase patients with red cell disorders and external referrals. There will be no commitment to transfusion, although the post-holder may be required to liaise with the Trust lead for BT +/- other staff during working hours, in order to provide a safe and seamless service.
Applicants should have an interest in red cell disorders, experience in clinical research and preferably a higher medical degree in this or a related area.
The appointee would be expected to support research within areas identified and develop their own particular area of interest.
Main duties of the job
The job plan is expected to comprise 10 Programmed Activities per week on average, to be carried out on UCLH site (with a potential minority component of home-working, to be agreed on appointment), with an on-call commitment. The new post-holder will be expected to discuss and agree a detailed job plan including personal and professional objectives with the Clinical Lead within three months of their start date; and the Consultant may be required to undertake a prospective diary exercise to inform this process.
The job plan will comprise PAs Direct Clinical Care and PAs Supporting Professional Activities.
In the event of inability to agree a job plan either at appointment or upon annual review, or in the event of issues arising from the appraisal process, discussion will be with the Divisional Clinical Director in the first instance, and then the Surgery and Cancer Board Medical Director, with HR input as indicated.
