Responsibilities

* Act as part of the multidisciplinary team within Respiratory Medicine and provide a seamless service to patients. Work unsupervised in all areas and be responsible for day-to-day running of the area in which you are working.
* Participate in the delivery of a specialist clinical service and deliver a high standard of care to all patients.
* Perform a range of routine diagnostic lung function tests including spirometry, gas diffusion tests, static lung volumes, respiratory muscle tests and allergy skin tests. Set up sleep studies, analyse and report sleep studies. CPAP set‑up and review CPAP therapy.
* Rotate through the Lung Function Department to extend knowledge of lung function and sleep investigations; rotation in sleep service and lung function service to obtain competencies within the department and for state registration (AHCS).
* Competently perform a full range of basic lung function tests on adults and paediatric out-patients and in-patients; analyse basic lung function tests on adults and paediatric patients; set up sleep studies and analyse and report sleep studies.
* Competently initiate patients on CPAP/VPAP therapy, follow up and review patients; review and prioritise inpatient requests for respiratory investigations within lung function tests, sleep studies and CPAP/VPAP set-ups.
* Respond to emergency situations promptly and professionally, maintaining control and requesting assistance as necessary.
* Participate in training in other disciplines when rotated through the department for ongoing professional development and maintain standards of technical competency.
* Assist with the efficient running of the technical service by prioritising the daily workload where appropriate; deputise for the Senior Respiratory Physiologists when necessary.
* Be responsible for the day-to-day running of the working area, ensuring equipment is operational, stock levels are maintained, and that equipment and non‑disposable items are cleaned according to departmental policies and procedures.
* Ensure all patients receive appropriate and individualised care, liaise with ward and medical staff to ensure availability of physiologist staff for in-patient testing, and ensure data entered into databases is timely and accurate.
* Work with the department to translate latest clinical physiology trends into practice and transfer knowledge to staff within the area of responsibility.
* Support in research studies as required and participate in in-house training and the technical competency log.
* Participate in the training of students and assistants on rotation through the department and work toward ARTP Part 1 and 2 (where applicable).
* Work to gain accreditation and join the Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists (AHCS) and work in accordance with standards set by ARTP and AHCS.
* Make contact with patients via telephone to rebook appointments for DNAs; assist CPAP patients with telephone queries, equipment preparation, and updating reports as needed.
* Respect and promote economical use of supplies and ensure familiarity with PAS, PRISM and other computerised systems integral to the department.


Qualifications and Experience

* Competency in performing basic and sleep-related lung function tests and CPAP/VPAP management.
* Ability to work in a rotating department to gain competencies and meet professional registration requirements (AHCS).
* Interest in ongoing professional development and training, with commitment to upholding departmental standards and regulatory requirements.


Personnel and Working Environment

* Works to achieve competencies across the department as appropriate to grade and communicates effectively with healthcare professionals, staff, patients and their representatives.
* Provides supervision, training support and assistance to newly staff as appropriate and attends mandatory training and departmental/Trust-wide meetings.
