The Biodiversity Information Office (BIO) is responsible for making Western Australia’s biodiversity data more discoverable, accessible and usable and has implemented the Dandjoo data platform to mobilise data from all environmental-related sectors, including government, industry, research and the community. BIO’s ongoing program of work includes data sharing and outreach work, identifying and sourcing priority datasets for ingestion and delivery through Dandjoo and managing a central catalogue of the state’s taxonomic information to ensure data integrity.

The Data Engineering Officer will contribute technical support to the execution of data engineering activities across the data lifecycle including data ingestion, data quality management, application of data standards, and delivery of data to users.

Collaborating with a dynamic team of software engineers and science officers, they will support and optimise data workflows and pipelines delivering the technical requirements to meet the business objectives of BIO and the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA).

Selection Criteria

Applicants should address the following five (5) criteria. These should be addressed in no more than two (2) pages in total.

1. Considerable experience in the contemporary management of data across one or more components of the data life cycle comprising data ingestion, data quality assurance, application of data standards, and data delivery.

2. Demonstrated experience in developing, evaluating and monitoring data pipeline workflows and processes.

3. Demonstrated experience with integration from structured and semi-structured file and API sources.

4. Experience in working with databases systems (relational and NoSQL); compiling queries; creating and managing database structures; and cloud-hosted database services such as Azure SQL/MongoDB.

5. Experience of at least two of the following: Python, R or Bash/PowerShell scripting, Apache Spark or similar, Data Factory/ETL tools, and/or data lakes.
