Job Overview
An opportunity to work as a full‑time permanent Intensivist Consultant or a Locum Consultant (23‑month term) with an experienced team of five consultant senior decision makers. The role covers intensive care at a Level 2 service, stabilising and transferring complex airway (Level 3) patients to our main site hospital. The rota is 1:5 non‑resident with support from a SAS resident on‑call team and a daytime ACCP service for ITU, alongside daytime Critical Care Outreach.
Furness General Hospital is a district general hospital in South Cumbria, close to the Lake District. Westmorland General Hospital is on the outskirts of Kendal.
Main Duties
* Participate in a 1:8 senior decision‑maker rota and prospective cover.
* Join a team of eight consultants with specialists and specialty doctors supporting general services, A&E, theatres (maternity, gynaecology, orthopaedics, trauma, ophthalmology, ENT).
* Provide non‑residential on‑call cover for emergency ITU, supervising a dedicated resident anaesthetist.
* Lead assessments of deteriorating patients for emergency admission to the ICU.
* Manage Level 2 local care and transfer Level 3 patients to Royal Lancaster Infirmary.
* Lead the team in managing pre‑ and post‑operative theatre admissions.
* Participate in clinical audit, governance and quality improvement.
* Demonstrate evidence‑based practice.
* Undertake and participate in appraisal, job planning and revalidation processes.
* Contribute to service development in areas of special interest.
* Actively participate in continuing medical education and maintain mandatory training.
Person Specification
* Full GMC registration with a licence to practice.
* FICM or an equivalent qualification.
* FRCA or an equivalent higher anaesthetic qualification.
* Higher postgraduate professional qualifications in research or education.
Training and Experience
* ICM recognised formal training in intensive care medicine or equivalent.
* Experience managing trauma and other surgical emergencies.
* Broad exposure to anaesthesia, particularly laparoscopic, emergency surgical and obstetric emergencies.
* Evidence of involvement in audit.
* Knowledge of and interest in medical education.
Personal Skills
* Ability to work within a multidisciplinary environment.
* Experience working in a multidisciplinary team.
* Effective communication skills.
* Leadership of a clinical team.
* Supervision of junior medical staff and relevant disciplines, with GMC recognised training in educational and clinical supervision.
* Attendance at an advanced communication skills course.
* Evidence of significant leadership roles, training or abilities.
Research and Development
* Completion of audits.
* Ability to supervise junior doctors in research and audit projects.
* Peer‑reviewed publications.
* Recent independent or supervised research with relevant publications.
Teaching
* Commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training.
* Previous undergraduate teaching experience.

* A diploma in education or other teaching qualification.
Management
* Awareness of the managerial role of a consultant in the NHS.
