Location & Salary
Salary: Cheltenham £45,841 (includes £2,758 concessionary payment); London £52,091 (includes £6,250 London Weighting and £2,758 concessionary payment). Additionally, you could qualify for a specialist skills payment starting from £4,420. Skills revalidation is required every three years.
Role Overview
As a Senior Data Scientist, you’ll leverage data science to advance our mission and inform policy and strategy decisions. While this role is data‑centric, collaboration is at its heart. You will collaborate with data scientists and mission teams to use our services for problem‑solving and discovering new applications, research and implement both established and novel models, and adapt AI techniques into a microservice architecture. Supporting our Development Operations (DevOps) team, you’ll explore innovative Machine Learning Operations (ML Ops) tools and learn to host large language models across multiple Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). After a year, opportunities appear to manage data scientists and engineers.
Responsibilities
* Collaborate with data scientists and mission teams to solve problems and discover new applications.
* Research and implement established and novel machine‑learning models.
* Adapt AI techniques into a microservice architecture.
* Support DevOps with ML Ops tools and host large language models on GPUs.
* Mentor and manage data scientists and engineers after one year.
* Communicate complex projects and data‑science techniques to stakeholders, including non‑specialists.
* Ensure mission‑critical data is used responsibly and ethically.
Qualifications
* A Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths (STEM) or computer‑science‑related degree, or equivalent qualification.
* Deep understanding of machine learning, including training, deployment and maintenance.
* Proficiency in exploratory data analysis, statistical reasoning and data‑driven decision‑making.
* Experience in data science or software engineering, with ability to communicate with experts in both fields.
* Leadership experience: mentoring and supporting colleagues, leading teams, and working with internal and external partners.
* Knowledge of the full lifecycle of machine‑learning projects, from prototype to functional system component.
* Proficiency with Python, Kubernetes, Docker, JavaScript, and Java.
Eligibility & Clearance
* You must be a British citizen or hold dual British nationality.
* The role requires the highest security clearance, Developed Vetting (DV).
