Job Overview
The average daily emergency “take” in Adult Medicine is 35 patients (+25 for Care of the Elderly) and the average length of stay is < 4-5 days. Consultant post‑take ward rounds are carried out continuously in the EQ (Emergency Quadrant). There are over 6,000 emergency admissions each year to Adult Medicine, with a further 4,000 annual admissions to Care of the Elderly. The Division of Emergency and Integrated Medicine has twice‑weekly sessions of postgraduate and audit activity, including a weekly Physicians’ Grand Round, and a weekly lunchtime Clinical Conference. The Division has a regular teaching commitment with resident students from Cardiff, Manchester and Liverpool, and a core curriculum is taught to Foundation Year One and SHOs/FY2’s, with regular MRCP tutorials. A dedicated Clinical Governance Unit and Audit Office have permanent staff. Speaking Welsh is desirable but not required; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome.
Main Duties
* Provide support to Consultant and Associate Specialist in managing in‑patients and out‑patients (ambulatory patients).
* Provide leadership and education to the junior doctors on the team.
* Serve as an on‑call middle grade.
* Contribute to local postgraduate activity.
* Participate in Clinical Audit and CPD, supported by the Health Board.
* Participate in research projects as necessary.

Person Specification – Essential Criteria
* Meets professional health requirements (in line with GMC standards / Good Medical Practice).
* Provides complete details of employment history with evidence that career progression is consistent with personal circumstances.
* Has at least 24 months experience in medicine or an ACCS programme or equivalent (excluding Foundation modules).
* Eligible for full registration with the GMC at the time of appointment and holds a current licence to practice.
* Demonstrates achievement of Foundation competencies from a UKFPO‑affiliated Foundation Programme.
* Demonstrates achievement of CT/ST1 and CT/ST2 competences in medicine as defined by core medical curricula.
* Is eligible to work in the UK.
* Has not previously relinquished, released or removed from a training programme in the specialty, except under exceptional circumstances.
* Is fit to practice safely.
* Demonstrates adequate written and spoken English skills, as evidenced by UK medical training or IELTS scores of 7 in all categories.
* Possesses appropriate knowledge base and can apply sound clinical judgement to problems.
* Is aware of the basics of managing cardiovascular disease.
* Can demonstrate proficiency in a range of medical procedures (as defined by the CMT curriculum).
* Shows competence in managing medical emergencies and in‑patients through continuous work‑based assessments, portfolio evidence, and log‑book documentation if applicable.
* Has current ALS certification or equivalent.
* Understands research fundamentals and ethical issues.
* Understands the basic principles of audit, clinical risk management, evidence‑based practice, patient safety and clinical quality improvement initiatives.
* Has teaching experience and has participated in teaching courses.
Person Specification – Desirable Criteria
* MRCP (UK) full diploma or equivalent.
* Intercalated BSc or equivalent.
* Higher degrees (MSc, PhD, MD) where the research thesis is not part of the first medical degree.
* Awareness of the basics of managing general medical emergencies.
* Evidence of competences in the specialty as defined by relevant curricula.
* Evidence of skills in the management of acute medical emergencies (e.g. ALERT, IMPACT certification).
* Evidence of ST3‑equivalent procedural skills relevant to medical patients.
* Evidence of relevant academic publications.
* Evidence of involvement in an audit project, quality project or formal research project with demonstrated impact.
* Evidence of involvement in teaching students, postgraduates and other professionals.
Required Qualifications
MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
MRCP (UK) Part 1 or equivalent at the time of application, or a commitment to obtain Part 1 within 6 months of appointment.
