Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) is transforming how people travel across the region. As we continue to modernise our digital and ticketing services, we are looking for a Test Automation Engineer to help deliver high‑quality, reliable technology solutions that support millions of journeys.
Your Role
As a Ticketing & Retail Test Automation Engineer, you will ensure that TfGM’s ticketing and retail products are robust, resilient and meet the needs of our customers. Working across the full software development lifecycle, you will translate user requirements and technical designs into effective test strategies and ensure our systems are thoroughly validated before release.
You will collaborate with Product Owners, UX Designers, Architects, Software Engineers and fellow Test Engineers to build and maintain high‑quality automated and manual test suites. You will also contribute to improving testing practices, tools and processes across the Ticketing team.
Key Responsibilities
* Create and deliver test plans ensuring TfGM services are fit for purpose.
* Translate business requirements into clear, effective test scripts.
* Develop and maintain automated and manual test suites with strong coverage.
* Collaborate across multidisciplinary teams to ensure high‑quality releases.
Qualifications
* Software engineering mindset: you see testing as engineering, not a separate activity. You read production code, reason about boundaries, and identify the right seams to test.
* Experience collaborating with cross‑functional teams (product, design, engineering, operations) to translate real‑world customer problems into technical solutions, using data and metrics to guide decisions and measure impact.
* Comfortable working in Agile, multidisciplinary teams and contributing across the full software development lifecycle.
* Confidence designing tests around APIs and third‑party contracts, and judging when to use real integrations vs mocks.
* Experience validating non‑functional requirements (performance, reliability, security, accessibility) as well as functional behaviour.
Salary
£52,710 - £57,447 per annum, depending on experience. This is comprised of base salary plus market supplement (£43,209 - £47,947 + plus MFS £9,500).
Benefits
* Generous annual leave starting at 28 days (plus bank holidays), increasing with service, with options to buy more.
* Free travel on buses across Greater Manchester, plus rail or Metrolink travel to and from work.
* Local Government defined pension scheme with life cover of 3x salary and options to boost your contributions.
* Enhanced family‑friendly leave policies, including those supporting fertility treatment, alongside flexible and hybrid working and a special leave policy to support a range of unexpected events.
* Well‑being support, personal and career development, flexible working, financial support and more (see our website).
Equal Opportunity Employer
TfGM is proud to be an equal opportunities employer that encourages and celebrates diversity. We commit to providing a fully inclusive and accessible recruitment process and offer reasonable adjustments if required.
