Main duties / Responsibilities
* Lead within the main laboratory area and act as a training officer for cellular pathology.
* Staff management and assisting with procurement for the department.
* Provide day‑to‑day management of the histology laboratory in collaboration with other team leaders and the histology laboratory manager.
* Undertake training of scientific and support staff; deputise for the Laboratory Manager in their absence.
* Maintain adequate consumable and reagent stock levels and oversee related procurement.
* Supervise and instruct staff to facilitate clinical technical services and maintain resources.
* Coordinate NEQAS registration and EQA submissions; audit histology error logs and implement root cause analysis and corrective actions.
* Arrange service contracts for laboratory equipment and monitor maintenance; oversee annual maintenance contracts and related standing orders and consumables.
* Perform appraisals and manage personnel issues in collaboration with the Laboratory Manager.
Qualifications
Essential criteria
* Approved degree
* HCPC registration
* MSc or relevant experience
* Evidence of continuing professional development
Desirable criteria
* IBMS Specialist Diploma in Histopathology
Experience
Essential criteria
* Post‑registration experience in a histopathology laboratory
* In‑depth specialist knowledge of histology
Desirable criteria
* Experience in non‑gynae cytology, immunocytochemistry, renal and muscle biopsies
* Previous supervisory experience; experience in in‑house staff training; health and safety management
Knowledge
* In‑depth specialist knowledge of histology
* Knowledge of patient confidentiality, quality assurance, and health and safety requirements
Skills
* Ability to interact with different staff groups; good verbal communication
* Motivational skills; ability to write in‑house documents; undertake risk assessments
Other
* Flexible and adaptable; good time keeping; self‑confidence
