Overview
Your primary role as a Pharmacy Assistant will be to support the supply of medicines to wards and departments within Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. You will accurately dispense medication for individual patients for use in inpatient and outpatient services, working from orders and prescriptions generated from the electronic prescribing and medicines administration system or paper medication charts/prescriptions. This includes dispensing medication into compliance aids and preparing orders of stock medicines for dispatch to wards using the SystemC computer system. You will also check orders made up by other staff for dispatch to wards and liaise with ward staff, external clinic/unit staff, Pharmacy technicians and Pharmacists. In addition you will assist in the management of pharmaceutical waste at ward and pharmacy levels and help maintain out-of-hours cupboards and emergency boxes.
Responsibilities
* Dispense medications accurately for inpatients and outpatients from orders/prescriptions (electronic or paper).
* Prepare and check orders of stock medicines for dispatch to wards using SystemC.
* Check orders prepared by others for dispatch to wards.
* Liaise with ward staff, external clinic/unit staff, Pharmacy technicians and Pharmacists.
* Support the ordering, stock management and distribution of over-labelled and pre-packed medication for specified departments.
* Assist in the maintenance of out-of-hours cupboards and emergency boxes.
* Support nursing and pharmacy teams in the management of pharmaceutical waste at ward and pharmacy level.
Location and Team
You will be part of the dispensary team of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and assistants who support the medicines supply service from the Berrywood Hospital dispensary, NHFT. NHFT is an integrated primary care and mental health Trust providing physical, mental health and specialty services in both hospital settings and in the community.
Qualifications and Experience
* 5 GCSEs grade C (or equivalent) or above including English and Mathematics
* Further education (e.g., A Level, BTEC or equivalent)
* Experience of following detailed protocols or procedures
* NVQ2 in pharmacy or equivalent experience (or willingness to work towards)
* Experience of working in a team environment
* Experience of using a computer / IT literacy; experience using Excel / other database software
* Experience of working in a hospital pharmacy environment
* Experience of stock control
* Experience of providing customer service; good written and verbal communication
* UK driving licence and access to a car
* A strong team spirit and good communication skills; ability to manage own workload and work as part of a team
* Willingness to work towards a pharmacy services NVQ level 2 with support if not already held
