Position: Design Engineer
As a design engineer, you'll develop ideas for new products and production systems. You'll also improve the performance and efficiency of existing products. Candidates will ideally be educated to degree standard and have a minimum of 3 years industrial experience. However, candidates with other qualifications and good experience in the field of engineering design will also be able to achieve design engineer status within SDC.
The Role
1. Design: Turning research ideas into detailed designs for production. Re-engineering designs to make them more production-friendly to gain valuable manufacturing time.
2. Reporting: Writing or presenting engineering reports on various areas of design. Producing production specifications and engineering drawings.
3. Knowledge & Compliance: Gaining knowledge of all relevant trailer legislation and applying it to designs. Ensuring designs adhere to good practice standards with respect to trailer safety and design.
4. Mentoring & Collaboration: Mentoring junior design engineers and sharing your design experience in review meetings to ensure the customer gets the best solution.
5. Continuous Improvement: Applying CI methodology to your working practices and understanding Lean Manufacturing principles.

Qualifications & Skills Needed
1. Strong problem-solving skills.
2. Team player with approachable and flexible attitude.
3. Practical hands-on approach.
4. Proficiency in 2D & 3D CAD software, ideally Autodesk products.
5. Knowledge of MS Office and in-house computer systems.
6. Understanding of design stress/loading calculations and familiarity with FEA.
7. Knowledge of fatigue stress and induced stress.
8. Good grasp of engineering and design principles.
9. Understanding of manufacturing processes and construction methods for trailers or similar heavy engineering.
10. Awareness of customer needs and project cost impacts.
11. Willingness to work outside normal hours when necessary.
12. Excellent communication skills.
13. Ability to produce high-quality designs consistently.
14. Honesty, punctuality, and dependability.
15. Awareness of health and safety policies.
16. Knowledge of your limits and when to seek guidance.
17. Legal right to work in the UK; evidence required before offer.
