Graduate Apprentice Data Science - IOM:\nWe are looking to hear from candidates who have a genuine passion for helping and supporting people within a leading institution and are looking to pursue a career in this field. \nAs well as receiving continued training and mentoring by the company, the successful candidate will undertake a Graduate Apprenticeship in Data Science at Napier University. \n\nAbout the Company:\nIOM was founded as a research charity in 1969 and has been at the forefront of scientific research to understand and mitigate a range of occupational and environmental health risks. These include coal dust, asbestos, carbon nanotubes and air pollution.\nWe seek to bring about an improved understanding of the factors affecting human health and to identify, promote and apply practices which will lead to improvements in the health of workers and the wider population.\n\nOur people share our purpose and vision for the future; to deliver a healthy and sustainable world in which we all live and work through our exceptional services, communications and science.\n\nMain Duties:\nAs a Graduate Apprentice in Data Science at IOM, you will support the organisation and its clients by providing data services and research which will help to drive informed decision-making, enhance stakeholder engagement, and strengthen commercial outcomes. Working across teams, you will Contribute to and support a wide range of research and consultancy projects, including data curation, cleaning, processing, management, analysis, visualisation, and interpretation. \n This role offers a unique opportunity to develop practical data science skills while contributing to real-world impact in a purpose-led, B2B environment, with a strong emphasis on collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning.\n\nWork activities: \n·\tContribute to and support a wide range of research and consultancy projects, including data curation, cleaning, processing, management, analysis, visualisation, and interpretation \n·\tLink datasets from multiple sources (e.g. sensors, surveys, administrative records)\n·\tSupport the development of reproducible data pipelines \n·\tApply quality assurance procedures and identify inconsistencies, biases, and missingness in complex datasets\n·\tSupport quantitative, statistical, and geospatial analysis, including the use of AI and machine learning, under supervision\n·\tEngage with real-world data challenges such as small sample sizes, noisy sensor data, and heterogeneous data sources\n·\tImplementation of data governance, confidentiality, and ethical considerations in handling health and workplace data\n·\tLearn to interpret and present findings from a variety of human exposure data (including from sensors and surveys) using effective data visualisation methods \n·\tContribute to articles for peer-reviewed publication and client-facing reports\n·\tDevelop and maintain scripts, tools, or software modules to automate repetitive data processing tasks \n·\tAssist in integrating and managing large-scale datasets using appropriate database or cloud solutions\n\nThe Company and Benefits:\nIOM are a highly respected leader in our field and we have worked on life-changing research for over 50 years. This unique combination offers an integrated experience, where practical skills and knowledge gained during the university days can be embedded in your working practices. Skills learned directly in the workplace are aligned with and can be applied to coursework and assessment. This allows you to attain an honours degree in 4 years, the same time as traditional full-time students.\n\nData Science is a new and rapidly expanding discipline that uses scientific approaches, business understanding, data and artificial intelligence to extract knowledge and understanding from the vast quantities of data sources that exist.\n\nThe BSc (Hons) Data Science Graduate Apprenticeship will equip you with the skills, knowledge, and behaviours to make a valuable contribution in one of Scotlandâs most in-demand skill-sets. You will enhance your skills and improve your career prospects in the emerging field of Data Science by studying for a fully-funded university degree while in a paid, relevant job role.\n\nCore skills:\n·\tExperience with statistical programming language (e.g. R), with an understanding of reproducible workflows\n·\tFamiliarity with data manipulation, processing, and cleaning\n·\tBasic understanding of statistical methods used in epidemiology and exposure science\n·\tExperience or interest in software development practices, including version control (e.g., Git) and collaborative coding \n·\tUnderstanding of database management systems (SQL/SQL Server) and structured data storage\n \nInterest in:\n·\tEmerging methods in data science, particularly those relevant to environmental and occupational health \n·\tGaining experience working on both research and consultancy projects \n·\tBest practices in reproducibility, transparency, and ethical data use\n·\tSoftware engineering approaches to data science, including modular code design and testing\n·\tData management strategies for long-term usability, accessibility, and security\n What qualification or qualities are required?\nTo meet our Standard Entry Requirements you must have EITHER: \nâ¢\tFour SQA Highers at Grade BBBB (or equivalent) including Maths, Statistics or Physics. National 5 grade C in Maths/Lifeskills Maths/Applications of Maths and English are required if not taken at Higher\nâ¢\tA Foundation Apprenticeship in IT: Software Development at SCQF Level 6 plus two SQA Highers at Grade BB\nâ¢\tA Modern Apprenticeship at SCQF Level 6-7 in an ICT/Digital related discipline\nâ¢\tHNC or HND in an unrelated discipline plus Higher Maths, Statistics or Physics at Grade B\nâ¢\tSufficient recognition of prior learning (RPL) through industry-related experience, qualifications, and informal learning.
