SEND Support Worker – School Based (Young People)

Milk Education is working closely with a specialist SEND school in Ashington to recruit SEND Support Workers who are committed to supporting children and young people with complex needs in a structured and supportive school environment.
The school supports pupils aged 5 to 19 with a wide range of needs, including Autism, ADHD and profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD). Many pupils are non-verbal, have sensory processing differences, physical disabilities, or require high levels of personalised support throughout the school day.
This role is well suited to individuals who are patient, caring and confident in supporting pupils who benefit from clear routines, calm communication and consistent approaches.
Key Responsibilities
1. Provide consistent 1:1 and small group support for pupils aged 5 to 19 with complex SEND
2. Support pupils with Autism, ADHD and PMLD, including those who are non-verbal
3. Use alternative and augmentative communication strategies such as Makaton, visual timetables and communication boards
4. Support the delivery of Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs)
5. Encourage emotional regulation, communication and engagement in learning
6. Support pupils with personal care when required, including moving and handling and toileting (training provided)
7. Work collaboratively with teachers, school staff and external professionals
8. Help maintain a calm, structured and inclusive learning environment
Person Specification
9. Experience as a Support Worker or in a similar care or support role
10. Openness to working with children and young people with complex needs
11. Experience supporting personal care is beneficial, or willingness to assist where required
12. A patient, caring and non-judgemental approach
13. Strong communication skills with the ability to adapt to individual pupils
14. Ability to work independently and as part of a wider school team
15. Enhanced DBS on the update service, or willingness to apply
