Royal Holloway is one of the UK’s leading universities for music, ranked no.1 in the UK for music research (Complete University Guide 2022–26, Times Good University Guide 2022–26). The Department of Music has grown significantly in the last five years, with investment in new facilities including professional-level recording studios. Our strong portfolio of undergraduate and postgraduate courses includes the expanding BMus Music and the BA Music and Sound Design for Film, TV and Games. We work closely with the cognate disciplines of Drama and Media Arts, maximising opportunities for creative collaboration among our students and staff.

The successful candidate will teach modules in music performance (for soloists and ensembles in a range of styles) and in skills for the creative industries including creative entrepreneurship and music management. Working collaboratively with our related disciplines of Drama and Media Arts, you will develop new modules and courses for undergraduates, postgraduates and lifelong learners that help train a resilient, skilled and diverse workforce for the creative industries. You will conduct research in music or music studies, leading to the production of outputs judged internationally excellent or world‑leading in the Research Excellence Framework. You will contribute to assessment procedures, the academic administration of the department, and to student recruitment activities such as open days and schools liaison.

You will be a versatile teacher with experience in teaching practical and theoretical/critical approaches to music performance, the music industries and creative entrepreneurship. You will be committed to enabling students to succeed from diverse backgrounds. You will have a PhD and be able to demonstrate high levels of excellence in your research.

The Department of Music’s teaching and research is underpinned by a commitment to equality and social justice. We welcome applications from all sections of the community, particularly from groups under‑represented in the university workforce.
