Band 6 Practice Nurse Primary Healthcare

Defence Primary Health Care (DPHC) Central and Wessex region are looking for a dynamic, organised, and efficient Band 6 Practice Nurse who will work within our Primary Health Care team at Benson Combined Medical Centre. Benson Medical Centre is combined with Abingdon Medical Centre, so flexibility to work from either site is required at any time depending on business need.

This is a full‑time role consisting of 37.5 hours per week.

Main duties of the job

As the successful candidate you will work as part of a multidisciplinary primary healthcare team, leading the delivery of primary healthcare nursing including elements of occupational health.

Due to the nature of the business, it would be beneficial if you have prior experience of primary care. Please see the attached Job Description and Person Specification for more information.

We are searching for someone who is able to work unsupervised, providing high‑quality nursing care to the medical facility population at risk, holding an individual case load, and through consultation, identifying, assessing, and managing the care of patients with complex health needs, minor injuries, minor illnesses, and specific diseases within their level of competence.

Many of our practices are networked and linked to provide support to each other. On occasion within your planned working schedule, you may be requested to work at the linked practice site. In these situations, travel time and cost will be allowed for.

Training and preceptorship will be provided to develop your skills and knowledge to work effectively in our teams.


Job responsibilities

As the successful candidate your duties will include, but are not limited to:

* Assessing the needs of patients against a recognised model of care, implementing and evaluating care ensuring patients receive care according to practice guidelines and delegating care; accordingly, this includes prioritising treatment and care.
* Assisting practice running, equipment checks, cleaning clinical areas and maintaining adequate supplies of stock.
* Providing safe, evidence‑based, efficient, and individualised patient care.
* Undertaking preventative health programmes such as travel and vaccination clinics, new patient screening, audiometry.
* Undertaking technical nursing treatments and procedures for patients complex/specialist healthcare needs (e.g., wound care, sutures removal, Electrocardiograms (ECGs), Cytology, Audiometry, Ear Care).
* Providing specialist advice and support to patients, their families and other healthcare professionals following assessment, diagnosis and through treatment.

Person Specification


Registrations and Memberships

* Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
* Registered Nurse – on sub‑Part 1 (RN1/RN(A)) of the Nursing and Midwifery Council register.
* Please provide your membership registration number.
* You are required to be registered with the relevant professional body, as detailed in the advert, prior to submitting your application.
* Your application will not progress should you fail to provide a valid membership registration number.


Behaviour Statement

* Have you been dismissed for gross misconduct relating to bullying, harassment, discrimination or victimisation from any role in the past five years, or resigned or otherwise left a role but would have been dismissed for such gross misconduct because of an adverse decision, had you continued in that employment?

Qualifications

* Professional/clinical knowledge acquired through training to degree/diploma level.
* Must be in date for Basic Life Support (BLS) Anaphylaxis, Automated External Defibrillation (AED).
* Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) or willingness to undertake training.
* Safeguarding Level 3 (Children and Adult) depending on population at risk or willingness to undertake training.

Experience

* To be proficient in relevant Information Technology (IT) systems subject to appropriate training being provided.
* Willingness to undertake specific training to fulfil competency for role (e.g., audiometry, ear care, minor illness/injury, physical assessment, travel health) and DPHC/MOD training as appropriate.
