Prior to the commencement of site works you will play a pivotal role in ensuring that the design is developed with a focus on constructability and efficient delivery as a Track Specialist Design Manager. Reporting to the Engineering Leadership, you will work closely with the Design and Delivery Teams, external design partners and alliance members to develop and manage the design for Temporary Railheads, Resilient Track and Switches & Crossings. The role will be based either in our London or Birmingham offices and will require attending weekly meetings with the broader team and/or client in Birmingham/London.</p><h3>Responsibilities</h3><ul><li>Establish and promote best practice in health, safety, sustainability, cost, time, buildability and appropriate quality matters.</li><li>Manage the design process to ensure that the design solution for each element of the track is safe, efficient to build, compliant with the contract Specification and delivered to schedule within budget.</li><li>Promote the use of engineering expertise and modern methods of construction to add value to design development.</li><li>Implement a 3D design delivery strategy to inform and deliver the project BIM Execution Plan (BEP) requirements.</li><li>Input into internal, client and external engineering workshops and steering groups.</li><li>Perform reviews of technical proposals.</li><li>Develop and maintain an awareness of SHE hazards and associated risks, and demonstrate a commitment to eliminate or minimise those risks.</li><li>Manage the design programme, monitoring and reporting via programme updates, trackers and progress meetings.</li><li>Obtain relevant documentation and approvals from relevant bodies, designers and stakeholders.</li><li>Interface with NR and relevant stakeholders as required.</li><li>Provide expert guidance and technical support, working closely with HS2 and project teams to identify and mitigate risks and ensure compliance with the Works Information requirements.</li><li>Identify opportunities to improve the design by considering safety, buildability, quality and best‑value compliant solutions.</li><li>Coordinate the whole design process and manage change.</li><li>Organise design coordination and design progress meetings with the design team and specialist supply chain partners, ensuring that design risk assessments are produced.</li><li>Prepare minutes, notes and reports as required to ensure effective communication and accurate records are maintained.</li><li>Manage the document control process, supported by a document controller.</li><li>Maintain a professional approach with clients, their professional teams, subcontractors and suppliers.</li><li>Manage other junior team members who may report into this role.</li></ul><h3>Qualifications</h3><ul><li>Strong management skills, with a positive and collaborative approach.</li><li>Enthusiastic team player, able to listen, understand, engage and motivate, and with confidence to make decisions when required.</li><li>Degree qualification in civil engineering, mechanical engineering or equivalent.</li><li>Professionally qualified, preferably Chartered Engineer.</li><li>Extensive experience in the design and construction of ballasted and ballastless track.</li><li>Experience in resilient slab track is positively assessed.</li><li>Experience in the design and construction of Switches and Crossings.</li><li>Experience in managing and delivering design and construction interfaces between track systems and other railway systems.</li><li>Knowledge of track design procedures and standards.</li><li>Ability to work in a collaborative multidisciplinary team environment.</li><li>Knowledge of the work process in design offices through successful experience of design delivery coordination.</li><li>Good commercial understanding of contracts, procurement routes and risk management.</li><li>Good collaborative planning skills.</li><li>Thorough understanding of 3D design and BIM, with a desire to drive improvements and benefits through embracing digital construction.</li><li>Excellent communication skills, both at the personal level and more formal reporting level.</li><li>Practical experience of harmonising design and quality requirements with buildability and a strong desire to problem‑solve.</li></ul><h3>Work Location</h3><p>The role will be based either in our London or Birmingham offices and will require you to attend weekly meetings with the broader team and/or client in Birmingham or London.</p></div>
