MAIN PURPOSE:

Complete duties relating to driving and being responsible for a vehicle, equipment, crew etc. completing duties as part of a set work schedule for waste collection, cleansing, recycling and street cleansing.

Work individually or as part of a team to complete a range of duties including operating and being responsible for allocated equipment, working in co-operation with other crew members. Completion of daily/weekly work schedules in relation to allocated duties.

Take responsibility for the safety, supervision and transportation of the crew, ensuring crew members comply with operational procedures whilst carrying out their duties and dealing with queries from members of the public or referring to the postholder's line manager as appropriate.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Service DeliveryCarry out pre-use and routine checks before driving any vehicle, completing and returning a vehicle pre-use check report to the postholder's line managers as instructed.Drive allocated vehicle in accordance with appropriate licence as directed and be responsible for the vehicle including the use of analogue/digital Tachograph in compliance with the Road Traffic Regulations (Northern Ireland) Order 1997 as amended and all other Transport related legislation.Ensure the safety of Council employees and the general public by carrying out an assessment of driving conditions and adopting safe methods of working on an ongoing basis, particularly during periods of severe weather.Operate and be responsible for council plant, tools and equipment in general, including but not limited to the safe use of appropriate mechanical aids, equipment and tools etc. provided to perform the relevant function clearing up spillages, safe collection and waste disposal, ensuring they are kept in good condition at all times.Manually remove obstructions from the path of the sweeping equipment which could damage the mechanism of the machine, litter picking as necessary with the designated team.Ensure on-board systems including weighing, safety devices, in-cab devices, telematics and communication systems are fully operational and used in accordance with operational procedures.Follow the reporting procedure in relation to vehicle accidents, breakdowns and near misses including damage to the vehicle, third party vehicles or property, reporting same to the postholder's line manager and completing any relevant paperwork.Carry out daily cleaning of vehicle and components, including the cleaning and operation of any fitted power mechanism and ensuring that the vehicle is washed out at the end of each working day, wearing appropriate PPE as instructed.At the beginning and end of shift, ensure the vehicle has fuel, oil and water as required and is safe for the road.At the end of the shift, ensure the vehicle is empty when returned to the allocated parking location and that it is washed to ensure that the vehicle is kept clean.Notify the postholder's line manager of any litter problems, illegal dumping or fly tipping encountered.Collection and distribution bins, caddy's, liners and other materials as required ensuring stock is maintained at the depot.Complete and maintain schedules, daily logs or digital equivalent on a daily basis, detailing all problems/incidents encountered as well as daily tasks that have not been completed on the prescribed day for whatever reason and return to the postholder's line manager.Responsible for any other duties in the event that driving duties are not required or have been completed as per the daily schedule. Duties may be allocated anywhere in the Borough and include emptying/ cleaning litter or dog waste bins and clearance of any illegal dumping and dead animals and recorded and stored in accordance with policy.Provide flexible and effective cover across a range of Council's operational services, to include refuse collection, household recycling and street cleansing duties (including clearing of fly tips) in line with the duties and responsibilities of these posts.Carry out duties in all weather conditions, however in the event of inclement weather resulting in early/non route completion, undertake reasonable alternative tasks as may be allocated by management, including gritting, snow clearance and training.Assist as required with any promotional activities designed to encourage the public to recycle, including personal contact with the public, placing items and materials on bin and assisting with any public survey work.Attend meetings and participate in training and development relevant to the work of the Council as requested which may involve travelling to another location.Deliver job familiarisation and provide guidance to new entrants and casual staff as required in the use of plant, vehicle equipment and other training relating to refuse collection and recycling operations.Adhere to all Health & Safety legislation, risk assessments, work practices, safe working methods & procedures.Key holding for access and securing the building outside of normal working hours.Deal with queries from members of the public or refer to the postholder's Line Manager as appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

ESSENTIAL:

Applicants must have:

2. Valid Category C1 Driving Licence
3. Valid Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) card
4. A minimum of one years' continuous driving experience
5. Any penalty points active on the driving licence must be declared along with the relevant code. These will then be assessed for relevance of the duties of the post.
6. Must successfully pass a driving assessment

DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

7. One year's previous experience of working in a waste environment
8. Experience driving a left-hand drive vehicle
9. A minimum of two years' continuous driving experience
