We need a Marine Water Quality Officer to help make our ambition of cleaner waters a reality. You’ll join the Marine team in Operations Catchment Services, applying technical expertise in marine environments, modelling, and data analysis to support evidence‑based decisions. The role involves assessing the impact of discharges on water quality across key areas, including nuclear new build, major infrastructure projects, and the Water Industry National Environment Programme. You will also model bathing water quality and nutrient loads in estuaries.
Responsibilities
* Review reports and summarise key information for decision‑making.
* Use data to inform water quality models.
* Apply sound records management principles.
* Interpret monitoring data and model outputs to support environmental protection.
* Summarise and communicate technical work and escalade challenges when needed.
* Build strong relationships across a dispersed team and with external partners.
* Use initiative to contribute to the work of the team and wider organization.
* Take on incident response duties, with full training and support, accepting additional payment and flexible arrangements if required.
Experience / skills required
* Experience in data analysis and ideally some knowledge of modelling software.
* Skills in tools such as Excel, Access, R, Power BI, GIS, and specialist packages like Mike or Cormix are an advantage.
* Ability to review complex reports and communicate key issues to non‑technical audiences.
* Knowledge of water quality and marine environment is desirable.
* Degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline expected; professional membership desirable.
* Comfortable working in a virtual team and travelling for occasional national meetings.
* Training and development opportunities to be provided.
Additional information
Two positions to backfill: one permanent and one fixed‑term for six months.
Location: National role; working location flexible/hybrid based at EA Office.
Learning and development: Training and mentoring will be provided; you may be offered an alternative position if you consent to be retained on a reserve list for six months.
