The Assistant Finance Director – Financial Accounting is responsible for the provision of an efficient, effective, and professional Financial Accounting service.
This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic, experienced individual to become a member of the Senior Finance team, providing leadership and expert knowledge to the department and wider organization.
The post holder is responsible for financial advice, information, accounting, forecasting, and reporting of the capital and cash programmes. This individual has overall responsibility for the production of key Group financial information, including an integrated set of monthly financial accounts as required by NHSE and annual statutory accounts.
While East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust has a history of significant deficits and liquidity issues, it is investing heavily in turning that around. The Foundation Trust also has large, complex subsidiaries generating a technically challenging environment and group structure for its annual accounts—an ideal environment for an experienced Financial Accountant eager to expand their knowledge.
As a member of the Finance leadership team, this role provides accurate, timely, and robust financial information to support the Foundation Trust’s objectives and strategic financial targets. The post holder oversees technical accounting arrangements, ensuring a robust, documented control environment compliant with statutory and professional standards. They are responsible for producing key financial reports, including monthly accounts, statutory accounts, and sections of the annual report.

The key responsibilities include:
1. Interpreting and advising on UK and international accounting standards and policies, including NHS ARMs and the NHS financial regime, and assessing the impact of potential changes.
2. Leading the statutory annual accounts process, ensuring accurate reflection of assets and liabilities, and providing expert guidance on NHS and financial policies.
3. Managing the Service Level Agreements with the East Kent Finance Consortium, ensuring timely and accurate financial information.
4. Overseeing the provision of services by the Finance Consortium, including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Technical Accounts, Cashier services, Banking, and Financial Systems.
5. Advising on VAT responsibilities and liaising with VAT advisors.
