As a Specialist Cardiac Physiologist you will be required to work autonomously as a competent practitioner within the CIU department. Duties will include specialised cardiac investigations such as diagnostic and interventional cardiology, permanent pacemaker implants & follow‑up & routine non‑invasive investigations.


On‑call and Specialisation

Participation in an out of hours on call service for emergencies is an obligation for this post. You will be expected to develop your knowledge & skill into a specialist route of either echocardiography or cardiac rhythm management, as part of this role.


Key Responsibilities

* Be technically proficient as an independent practitioner in basic and specialist invasive and non‑invasive cardiology procedures, including:
o Diagnostic angiography – monitor and record cardiac physiological measurements during the procedure.
o Interventional angiography (PCI, stents, intravascular ultrasound and pressure wire).
o Permanent pacemaker implantation – record accurate lead function tests to guide secure implantation of cardiac pacing leads.
o Routine implantable device follow‑up – record accurate lead function tests, making clinical decisions for basic reprogramming.
* Analyse ambulatory ECG recordings and produce a factual report that may impact on patient clinical management.
* Exercise stress testing & cardiopulmonary exercise services – assist the lead Cardiac Physiologist (CP) during the procedure and aid in the production of a technical report.
* Doctor‑supervised exercise stress testing – produce good quality ECG and blood pressure tracing.
* Tilt testing – assist lead CP/ supervising doctors.
* Participation in the on‑call rota for PPCI, emergency angiography & intervention, pacemaker implantation & implantable device checks.
* Supervise junior staff in all aspects of invasive and non‑invasive cardiac procedures.


The Lancashire Cardiac Centre

The Lancashire Cardiac Centre is a tertiary cardiac provider for the people of Lancashire & Cumbria. The centre has a well‑established invasive and non‑invasive services covering a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic services, including cardiac angiography & intervention (Primary PCI, TAVI, ASD/PFO closure), device implants (ICDs, CRTs) and EP procedures (NAVX, PVAC, CRYO). All these areas are developing rapidly with new technology.


Role and Development

We are looking to recruit Band 5 Cardiac Physiologists in the Cardiac Investigations Unit. Candidates should have good experience in cardiology procedures and be willing to progress their career. The post holder will possess a BSc in clinical physiology or equivalent, and be on the RCCP register. The successful candidate will be expected to work unsupervised in most areas and develop in the field of speciality. Candidates who lack experience in some areas will be provided with training plans devised by our training manager.


Education and Training

* BSc (Hons) Clinical Physiology or equivalent.
* Maintain intermediate life support qualifications.
* Achieve & maintain competency in invasive and non‑invasive cardiac procedures following an in‑house training programme.
* Develop in the echocardiography or cardiac rhythm management route.
* Attend training courses to update technical, physiological and pathological knowledge of specialist and routine cardiac procedures and specialised equipment.
* Undertake additional staff development courses agreed with your line manager.
* Obtain registration for clinical cardiology practitioners.


Skills and Knowledge

* Communicate effectively with patients and other health professionals at all levels. Empathise with patients, provide reassurance and handle difficult patients.
* Supervise newly appointed trainees in basic clinical settings.
* Attend regular audit meetings.


Working Conditions

* Exposure to body fluids including blood.
* Assist patients with poor mobility using wheelchairs, beds and trolleys.
* Push wheelchairs, trolleys and beds.
* Cardiac procedures involve prolonged sitting at a VDU, requiring intense concentration to interpret results.
* Emotional strain when dealing with critically ill patients; resuscitation may be performed.
* Wear radiation protection gowns for prolonged periods to protect from X‑ray radiation.


General Responsibilities

* Assist in the clinical management of patients undergoing cardiac investigations within the investigations unit.
* Ensure hospital policies and procedures are met.
* Promote good practice initiatives within the cardiology directorate.
* Keep up to date with current developments in cardiology, including research innovations.
