An exciting opportunity has arisen with this 0.6 WTE consultant post. St Columba’s Hospice Care is committed to delivering the highest standards of palliative care to people with life-limiting and progressive illness across North Edinburgh and East Lothian. This permanent consultant post is an opportunity to join our highly motivated and innovative multi-disciplinary team. The successful candidate will initially work primarily to support the Hospice inpatient service but will also provide consultant cover for our community services when needed. You would be joining us at an important time as we move into year 2 of our ambitious new 3-year strategy (The Strength Behind Our Stories) and would be part of ensuring our services develop to meet the needs of people across Lothian.
St. Columba’s Hospice Care has been providing support to the people of Lothian for over 47 years. We are a leading Specialist Palliative Care Service, providing inpatient facilities for 15 patients, a range of community based palliative care services, a range of patient and family support services, as well as busy and productive Education and Research departments. In 2023 we launched Scotland’s first hospice Virtual Ward which provides enhanced practical medical and nursing care for people in their own homes. You will work with the Medical Director and other consultant in providing senior medical input to patients with specialist palliative care needs.
As a University and Approved Medical Training Hospice, the successful applicant will also play an integral role in the education of medical students. The Hospice is an approved NES medical training site and participates in the training of specialty registrars and GPST doctors. You will, with appropriate training, lead the educational supervision of specialty trainees and, in the future, conduct appraisals within NHS Lothian. The Hospice strives to provide an ongoing commitment to equitable safe, high-quality services for our patients, their families and our staff. As a consultant you will work alongside other senior colleagues to plan and carry out service development, risk management and clinical governance activities.
Applicants must be fully registered with the GMC, hold a Licence to Practise and be on the Specialist Register (via specialty training or CESR route) at the time of commencing the post. Along with colleagues across Lothian and Borders, you will also participate in the consultant on-call rota on a 1.0 WTE basis.
Informal enquiries are welcome. For a discussion about the role, please contact Dr Duncan Brown (Medical Director) or Dr Tony Duffy (Consultant) on 0131 551 1381. It is anticipated that interviews will take place in the first half of September. Further information about the Hospice and our services is available on our website.
