Location: Antrim Care Home, 88 Milltown Road
The Senior Care Assistant role in Antrim Care Home is an enhanced Care Assistant role that provides a range of clinical interventions to enhance the resident experience and the level of care residents receive under supervision of a registered nurse.
On a daily basis, the Senior Care Assistant will support the nurse(s) to supervise and deliver excellent standards of care which ensures all residents feel ‘at home’, promoting privacy and dignity, whilst enhancing independence, rehabilitation and personal choice of residents in line with Hutchinson Care Homes core values. This role will be essential in supporting the regular changeover of residents in the IC setting and the consistent processes and procedures that need to be followed with each transition into and out of the Home.
This role will create an opportunity to build confidence with everyday decision making and problem solving, motivating the team to stay positive during challenging periods, ensuring the delivery of safe, compassionate and well-led care.
About The Role
Senior Carer Key Responsibilities
* Promote Hutchinson Care Homes core values, acting as a role model for the organisational values and champions what this means across the Home on a practical level on daily basis.
* Put into practice and instil and support others to demonstrate the importance of an excellent customer experience for all residents and their families across the Home.
* Encourage constructive feedback from residents, families, colleagues and other professionals to feed into the ethos of continuous improvement.
* Support the nurse(s) in leading and supervising the staff team to ensure that shifts run smoothly, delegating as appropriate and supporting with performance, absence management, personal hygiene, general appearance and adherence to uniform policy.
* Deliver care to residents as required including but not limited to meal time experience, elimination needs and general care and support, giving direction and on the job coaching to other staff, acting as a role model demonstrating the standards of care expected to be delivered.
* Take the lead in undertaking audits as directed by the Manager/Senior Nurses including but not limited to hand washing audits, commode audits.
* Support the Home Manager, and rest of the team in ensuring new initiatives are embraced across the Home in positive and proactive manner.
* Assist in the admission, transfer and discharge of residents and transfer to hospital or other appointments. Specifically, regarding the Intermediate Care setting:
* Preparation for admission and discharge of residents, preparation and readiness of room and equipment
* Ensure kitchen and laundry are kept fully informed of movement in and out of residents to meet all individual needs
* Coordinate orientation sessions with new residents and families as required. To include arrangements within the Home, mealtimes, various staff levels and responsibilities, isolation period, rehabilitation procedures, discharge procedures.
* Coordinate initial clinical observations of resident
* Update electronic records as required.
* Has knowledge and understanding of the electronics systems used for care planning and management.
* Support the nurse(s) ensuring that all mandatory documentation is recorded in accordance with best practice, signed and authorised across the team.
* Participate in the quality management system
* Liaise appropriately with visitors and caller to the home, welcoming them in a professional manner, resolving issues proactively, referring them to senior staff as appropriate.
* Actively promote team learning and development by encouraging team members to keep up to date with mandatory training and other development opportunities.
* Take part in meetings as required including patient reviews.
* Support the Nurse(s) to manage complaints as required.
* Support the Nurse(s) with the induction programme for new staff.
* Demonstrate a positive attitude toward the company and personal duties and responsibilities, with good work habits and a willingness to put forth extra effort when the situation arises.
* Promote good housekeeping and prevent neglect of furnishings, fittings and equipment thereby ensuring an efficient and well-managed area of care.
* Proactively highlight any area of concern within the Care Home to the relevant person to ensure it is addressed.
* Ensure to keep up to date with industry standards, improvements, development and good practice.
Clinical duties (once signed off as fully trained and competent in each area)
* Will first and foremost understand and appreciate the boundaries of this key role in the organisation in terms of ensuring to get advice/seek guidance from the nurse in charge/home manager as required.
* Will undertake clinical procedures to include physiological measurements (such as temperature, pulse, blood pressure), skin inspection, faeces sample collection, simple wound dressing, blood glucose monitoring.
* Recognise and act on changes in residents’ condition, including changes in physical and emotional health observations
* Undertake continence management
* Oversee nutrition and hydration management
Perform Medicine Management In Accordance With Agreed Protocols
* Undertake designated aspects of medicine management in line with legal requirements, agreed protocols and Hutchinson Care Homes policies and procedures.
Maintenance Of Health And Safety In The Workplace
* Give due consideration to the safety of others and acts as a champion in this area following legal, regulatory and best practice guidelines.
* Assist and proactively lead others in the reduction of infection risk.
* Demonstrate excellent standards of incident/ accident and emergency situation management.
* Contribute to a culture of safe moving and handling, carrying out a quality assurance role throughout the team as required offering on the job.
* Recognise and resolve safeguarding risks in line with the Deputy and Care Home Manager.
* Maintain knowledge and skills by completing mandatory training and other development opportunities.
* Support Senior staff with fire drill management.

Required Criteria
* A minimum of 12 months delivering Care in a care setting
* Can demonstrate compassion and commitment in delivering care to the elderly
* Excellent communication skills, verbally, written and comprehension with the ability to engage others on a one to one or group setting and influence other as required
* Experience in coordinating other staff to achieve results in a confident, assertive and respectful manner
* Experience in problem solving in a care setting
* Willingness to complete level 3 in Health & Social Care within 12 months of securing the role (if not already completed)
* Willingness to complete full programme of training required to be signed off as competent to carry out the full requirements of this role
Desired Criteria
* Experience leading a team of staff
* NVQ level 3 in Health & Social Care
