Drive the growth of this key business area, as part of a wider expansion plan for an ambitious independent accountancy practice.

We're looking for an experienced Bookkeeping & Payroll Manager to support a growing portfolio of clients, delivering a high-value service to a diverse client base.

Day to day, the Bookkeeping & Payroll Manager will be responsible for:

* Managing full bookkeeping services for a portfolio of clients, including recording financial transactions, reconciling accounts, and maintaining accurate ledgers
* Preparing and submitting VAT returns in compliance with HMRC regulations
* Operating in a fully paperless environment—all documentation is captured and stored electronically
* Ensuring clients adopt and maintain efficient systems—we are Xero exclusive and use Dext
* Supporting year-end preparation and liaising with accountants as needed
* Working closely with leadership to grow the bookkeeping division, increasing client numbers and revenue

Payroll Management

* Overseeing end-to-end payroll processing for a range of clients
* Administering RTI submissions, PAYE, NIC, pensions, and other statutory deductions
* Producing payslips and managing employee benefits and deductions
* Responding to payroll-related client queries professionally and efficiently
* Contributing to the growth and efficiency of the payroll division by improving processes and systems
* Leading efforts to explore and implement time-recording/job costing solutions, potentially collaborating with software partners
* Handling CIS processing and compliance

Client Relations

* Building strong, proactive relationships with clients as a trusted advisor
* Deliver high-quality, responsive service
* Promoting the use of digital tools and streamlined workflows
* Collaborating with internal teams to ensure seamless service delivery
* Offering input and innovation to help shape the future of the bookkeeping and payroll functions

You will need:

* Experience in bookkeeping and payroll management within an accountancy practice or similar environment
* Confidence in using Xero (essential) and tools like Dext
* Confidence working 100% digitally, with strong tech-savviness
* Solid understanding of UK payroll, VAT, and CIS legislation
* A proactive approach to problem-solving with a continuous improvement mindset
* Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple deadlines
* Positive, client-focused manner, and ability to take initiative
