Offer description

Applications are invited for 3-year non-clinical PhD studentships based at Cambridge University.

The BHF Cambridge Centre of Research Excellence (CRE) is a world-leading Interdisciplinary Research Centre. Our overarching scientific objective is to advance understanding of pathobiology, diagnosis, prevention, and therapy of cardiovascular disease, including implementation of new diagnostics/treatment, by applying our combined expertise in hypothesis-driven and assumption-free approaches. We achieve this through interdisciplinary capabilities in clinical, experimental, population and data sciences.

The CRE research themes are:

* Mobilising and translating discoveries from multi-omic cohorts
* Targeting inflammation in cardiovascular disease
* Advanced therapeutics for cardiac repair and regeneration
* Cardiometabolic syndromes: Exposome and molecular mechanisms Linking Obesity, Diabetes, HFpEF, NAFLD, and NASH
* Applied Cardiovascular Health Research

Research proposals should either cross traditional research disciplines or involve two or more of the CRE themes listed above. PhD students will be jointly supervised by two investigators, with at least one being a BHF CRE eligible supervisor. Before applying, it is expected that you will contact one or more potential supervisor(s) to discuss research interests and possible projects, for help to develop a research proposal and to gain their endorsement for your proposal.

Applicants should hold at least a first or upper second-class degree from a UK University or an equivalent standard from an overseas university in a subject relevant to the proposed area of study. Please ensure you meet the University of Cambridge entrance requirements.

Successful UK and non-UK applicants who meet the UK residency requirements could be eligible for full funding as tuition fees at the home rate will be covered. International students are also welcome to apply but must be able to cover the additional costs of overseas tuition fees, e.g. through scholarships or other funding schemes.

Our studentships also provide an annual stipend at the BHF rate (£21,114 in year 1 rising to £24,696) and a consumables/ other costs allowance.
