Senior Locally Employed Doctor in Paediatrics & Medical Education

Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital (RMCH) is the largest children’s hospital in the United Kingdom and a University Teaching Hospital linked with the University of Manchester Medical School. These two Medical Education posts (available from September 2026) offer the postholders the opportunity to develop skills and experience in medical education while gaining broad clinical experience in the assessment and management of a wide variety of paediatric conditions, including children with complex medical and surgical needs.

The postholders will work as part of a clinical paediatric post at RMCH ORC, including out‑of‑hours on‑call middle‑grade (Tier 2) duties as part of the Hospital 24 team at 60 % WTE, working with a clinical paediatric team and caring for children with RMCH. The remaining 40 % of their job plan is spent in undergraduate education activities within RMCH and the undergraduate department at Manchester Royal Infirmary.

Key responsibilities include assessment, investigation, and management of inpatients and outpatients, including assessment within the Paediatric Emergency Department when indicated. The postholder will be responsible for immediate supervision of junior tier doctors when on call or on weekends, and will lead daily ward rounds with support from the hot week Consultant. All referrals regarding Child Protection are seen by middle‑grade doctors/Consultants.

Undergraduate Clinical Education Fellows will support Manchester Medical School undergraduate students on clinical placements at RMCH by facilitating ward‑based and classroom‑based (including virtual) teaching sessions, coordinating student learning activities, and using simulated environments (skills lab, simulation suite) to supplement their educational experience. Fellows should have prior experience of teaching medical students; prior experience with simulation or virtual teaching tools is an advantage.
