About the Role
We are a small but proactive acute speech and language therapy team. This role will primarily be involved in provision of assessment and management to our Stroke HASU and ASU. The service has a weekly videofluoroscopy clinic and access to FEES as needed. We are currently involved in the PHEAST trial so you will be trained in the elements involved in this research project, with the potential to use Phagenesis if funding has been secured for patients outside of the trial.
Responsibilities
* Provide highly specialist assessment, therapy and advice to clients with a range of acquired disorders of communication and swallowing who are admitted to the HASU/ASU in-patient (Stroke) ward at BTUH.
* Support the service in management of the general acute ward population during times of reduced capacity, prioritised above Stroke caseload.
* Co‑ordinate the provision of SLT intervention across this service in the absence of a more senior staff member.
* Provide highly specialist knowledge, advice, training and teaching to carers, students, SLT team, medical staff and members of relevant MDTs.
* Support more junior staff within the acute SLT service.
* Provide therapy care plans to be carried out by a Speech and Language Therapy Assistants while retaining overall responsibility for the clients.
* Provide written reports and undertake appropriate liaison with medical staff, families, voluntary organisations.
* Assess and manage a stroke caseload, including complex dysphagia patients with tracheostomy when applicable.
* Deliver videofluoroscopy and FEES services when competencies have been achieved.
Qualifications and Requirements
* Experienced Speech and Language Therapist (SALT) independently able to manage a stroke caseload including dysphagia.
* Experience of complex dysphagia, including management of patients with tracheostomy, an advantage.
* Completion of videofluoroscopy / FEES competencies preferred.
* Ability to participate in research training (PHEAST trial) and potentially use Phagenesis if funding is available.
