We are seeking a highly motivated Research Technician with significant hands-on expertise in mass spectrometry to join the laboratory of Professor Dario Alessi at the MRC Protein Phosphorylation and Ubiquitylation Unit (MRC PPU), University of Dundee. This role offers an exciting opportunity to conduct cutting-edge research into the molecular mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative diseases, with a particular focus on the LRRK2 signalling pathway and its links to Parkinson's disease.
The successful candidate will work as part of a team to provide experimental support across a range of projects, including collaborations with external partners (academic, industry, clinical sites). They will contribute to the day-to-day running of the mass spectrometry platform, including liaising with collaborating researchers, planning experiments, sample preparation and analysis. They will have access to world-class mass spectrometry facilities, including two Orbitrap Astral Mass Spectrometers, Orbitrap Exploris 480 with FAIMS-Pro, tims-TOF SCP, Orbitrap Lumos and Orbitrap IQ-X Tribrid Mass Spectrometers and a rapifleX MALDI-TOF/TOF Tissuetyper. The post will also involve handling and analysis of the large datasets that arise from the studies and carrying out bioinformatics analysis of the data.
The post is available immediately and is funded for two years in the first instance.
Your priorities will include:
* Liaise with, and support, a team of scientists to ensure the Mass Spectrometry platform is run and maintained effectively to meet the projects' needs.
* Implement mass spectrometry workflows, including sample preparation and data analysis.
* Carry out studies on behalf of other researchers applying your technical skills in Mass Spectrometry and related techniques to enable the best experimental outcomes.
* Work collaboratively and communicate effectively with team members and external collaborators, to ensure effective experimental planning and data analysis.
* Present findings at internal and external scientific meetings.
Who we're looking for:
* Master or other post-graduate qualification in biological sciences or related subject area, or equivalent experience.
* Strong background in mass spectrometry, with significant hands-on experience with one or more aspects of mass spectrometry, including experimental design, sample preparation, running samples, data analysis.
* In-depth knowledge of mass spectrometry workflows.
* Proficiency in using mass spectrometry instruments available within the MRC-PPU.
* A good knowledge of Python, R and/or MATLab for data analysis and workflow automation and ability to write and develop scripts as well as modify and implement open source or published code is desirable.
* Experience in handling multi-omics (Integration of Proteomics, metabolomics or lipidomics) data is preferable but not necessary.
* Good interpersonal skills with a collaborative mindset and experience working in multidisciplinary teams.
* Excellent ability to work as part of a team and support the rest of the team as needed.
* Experience of collaboration is desirable.

What we offer:
* Full-time position with competitive salary.
* Access to world-class research facilities and training opportunities.
* A dynamic, inclusive, and internationally recognized research environment at one of the UK's leading institutions in life sciences.
* An exceptional opportunity to contribute to high-impact neurodegenerative disease research.
