Clinical Coding is the bedrock of most Trust business functions, influencing income from inpatient activity, emergency activity marginal rates, and mortality indicators such as HSMR and SHMI which rely on accurate coding to determine complexity and complication levels.
In this role you will support the Trust by ensuring that all admitted in‑patient activity entered into Cerner is accurately clinically coded within all required local and National timeframes.
This role supports the Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the only acute hospital in the London Borough of Hillingdon, which provides a wide range of medical services.
Responsibilities
* Ensure all admitted inpatient activity entered in Cerner is accurately coded within local and national timeframes.
* Communicate coding standards and best practices to multidisciplinary staff.
* Prioritise workload to meet team agenda and time limits.
* Maintain compliance with Data Protection Act and other regulatory requirements.
Qualifications
* Excellent understanding of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology.
* Thorough knowledge of ICD‑10 and OPCS‑4 coding systems.
* Knowledge of HRG classifications.
* Competence in computer‑based systems, including Microsoft suite.
* Working knowledge of Electronic Patient Administration Systems used in the NHS.
* Ability to communicate complex coding rules to medical, clinical, managerial and administrative staff.
* Capacity to see the bigger picture and prioritise workload to meet team agenda.
* Working knowledge of the Data Protection Act.
* Understanding of the National Tariff and its relationship to coding.
* Awareness of the wider use of clinically coded data.
